But moving into smaller quarters from a larger home can be a daunting task! e idea of finding room for the treasures that are important in your life while still seeking design and function in the new living space takes thoughtful planning. So whether you are down-sizing drastically or just a bit, the balance to seek is in not feeling deprived of space. e LIVING ROOM and entryway need to be comfortable and inviting. Choose a sofa, loveseat or small sectional that is the right proportion for the room. Coffee tables and end tables with drawers will keep the clutter to a minimum. Small trunks can serve as end tables or coffee tables as well. An accent cabinet or low bookshelf behind the sofa or sectional can offer space for books or display of a prized collection. Going VERTICAL with book- shelves and media or TV will offer more storage or display in a smaller footprint. A slender cabinet or console table with drawers in the entry way can also add a bit of storage. Your BEDROOM can feel serene and uncluttered with planning. Keeping the same size bed in a smaller space could mean choosing a storage bed. Storage Beds can range from mid-priced hard- wood bed frames with optional drawers underneath to more expensive designs with 6 drawers of built-in dresser and bookcase storage headboards. Again, you are able to maximize storage in the same footprint as the bed occupies. Choose a nightstand with drawers for additional space-saving. e GUEST ROOM is a great opportu- nity for multiple use. You want the people you love to be comfortable when they come to stay. But this room can be a per- fect space for home office, cras, hobbies, sewing or exercise. Rather than the default sleeper sofa, consider other options for guest beds. e Murphy Chest Bed looks like a credenza, but makes into a queen- size bed with a fabulously comfortable memory foam-gel mattress. Another idea is the WallBed (a contemporary version of the original Murphy Bed). WallBeds look like beautiful wood cabinetry and conceal a bed using any type of mattress you pre- fer. You can even create an entire storage wall using the matching piers along with the WallBed. All of this taking only about 20" of your room floor space when the bed is closed! ere is no need to alter the wall or your baseboards with installation of a WallBed. If you don't have the luxury of a guest room, either of these could be used in a living room as well. With some planning and creativity, you can surround yourself with the things you love and enjoy your new smaller digs. at's less housework and more time for the things in life that make you happy!
