A scent of charcoal and faint, sweet odor of horse manure lingered in the grass. We drove stakes into the heart of the field, but there were no vampires here. Late fall. Children danced their ways through a thousand games. A cobbled-clouded sky held promises— rockets, kites—even of the sun itself. After games, a calming down came as the dark grew around us. We slept on our own breath. Fog lifted from grass, stream and lake, feathered through the spaces in our conversations, the bongs of WABC and into the darkest tent. Lanterns flickered at it. We hunched before all that staring into the campfire, stirring our coffee and minds. When we woke—coffee-stained, ground-weary— the fog gone, flags were raised and flapping again. Outside our tents, a thousand arrows of dew pierced our eyes. —Frank Finale Subscribe and Bring the Jersey Shore into Your Home All Year-Round!
