FOR THE Wedding, Anniversary or Engagement Announcement By DAN MUCKELBAUER Post Editor MILWAUKEE — A $60 wheel tax brought back by County Executive Chris Abele as part of his 2018 budget request is facing heat. County Board Chairman Theodore Lipscomb Sr. pointed out almost three- quarters of the voters in a non-binding ref- erendum voted against it. "After 72 percent of voters rejected Abele's $60 wheel tax this spring, he must be tone deaf to reintroduce what remains a bad idea," Lipscomb said in a news release. Other county super- visors, including Michael Mayo Sr., have spoken out against it. That rejection came within months of the County Board chopping it in half, which went with a $30 wheel tax in the 2017 budget after public opposition to the tax as well as paying for parking on the lake- front. Abele said the public has shown support for a higher wheel tax. He noted county res- idents taking part in a budgeting exercise favored a $35 hike in vehicle registration. At three listening sessions through the Zeidler Center for Public Discussion, when choosing between cutting services and increasing revenue, most backed the wheel tax, Abele said in a news release. The county is limited in where it gets revenue, and most user fee increases would raise limited amounts, he said. A county sales tax, which could raise large amounts of money, would need approval from the state Legislature, Abele said. The county executive also said the $60 wheel tax has received independent sup- port, such as from the county comptroller and the Public Policy Forum. Abele has proposed the spending for transit, bridges and roads. State vehicle registration is $75, the county wheel tax is $30 and the city of Milwaukee charges $20, or $125 for a city resident to register one vehicle annually. Abele's plan would bring that charge to $155. The $60 county wheel tax would generate $14.7 million, if residents comply with it.
