Police Chief Ed Flynn has sub- mitted a formal policy revision, which gives officers more leeway in vehicle pursuits. Flynn's amendments come on the heels of a mid-summer directive to make changes at a time when vehicular accidents have happened at the hands of fleeing suspects. According to the Fire and Police Commission, the city's c i v i l i a n - l e d o v e r s i g h t group, the number of deaths linked to vehicle accidents rose 160 percent in year-over-year comparisons. The FPC linked the data to an ever-increasing number of fleeing vehicles during MPD traffic stops. On average, commissioners reported 600 suspects have been fleeing officers on a monthly basis this year — a statistic that is a nearly 100 percent increase in comparison to 2016. Flynn's policy revisions, approved by the FPC at a meeting last week, give officers greater lee- way in pursuing fleeing motorists during traffic stops. The goal, Flynn said, is to "pro- vide a high level of public safety for residents and visitors of the City of Milwaukee" and "employ police practices that do not create an unreasonable risk of harm to that same constituency."
