Clarke Jr. resigned as sheriff, the acting sheriff has outlined his priorities while the governor moves to fill the posi- tion. Clarke, who resigned effective 11:59 p.m. Aug. 31, has since announced through a spokesper- son that he will join President Donald Trump's political action c o m m i t t e e , A m e r i c a First Action. While having served in office as a D e m o c r a t , the tough- t a l k i n g Clarke has taken conser- vative stands and support- ed Republicans, speaking at last summer's Republican National Convention. "It gives me the chance to do what I love most — promote President Trump's agenda, including his fierce support for the American law enforcement officer, and ensure the will of the American people who got President Trump elected is not derailed by the left or the self-serv- ing Washington establishment," Clarke said Tuesday. In a brief statement last week, he said, "After almost forty years serving the great people of Milwaukee County, I have chosen to retire to pursue other opportu- nities." In May, Clarke said on Mark Belling's WISN radio program that he was offered a position with Department of Homeland Security. Clarke officially with- drew in June following about a month of largely negative reports. Gov. Scott Walker announced Wednesday he is seeking appli- cants for the sheriff vacancy cre- ated by the resignation. Acting Sheriff Richard Schmidt held a news conference Tuesday to outline the steps he will take before the governor makes the appointment. Schmidt, who has served wide- ly in command positions during his more than 30 years in the Sheriff's Office, said at his news conference, "Public safety is my priority."
