Post obituaries guidelines Burden on defense to prove mental disease or defect in September trial By HANNAH WEIKEL Conley News Service WAUKESHA — Anissa Weier pleaded guilty to lesser charges Monday for her part in the Slender Man stabbing three years ago. Weier will still stand trial next month, where a jury will decide whether she is not guilty based on mental illness. Before the guilty plea, Weier, now 15, and her attorneys and prosecutors agreed to amend her charge from first-degree to second-degree attempted intentional homi- cide, as a party to the stabbing of a class- mate allegedly committed by Morgan Geyser, also 15 now, to appease fictional horror character Slender Man. The change reduced her maximum penalty from 65 years to 25 years in prison with 10 years extended supervision. If the jury finds her not guilty due to mental disease or defect in September, Weier will be committed to a state mental institution for treatment and, as part of the agreement with the state, will not be able to seek conditional release until July 1, 2020. If Weier's mental disease defense is rejected at trial, prosecutors will recom- mend a sentence of 10 years in prison and 10 years of extended supervision. After approving the amended charge, Waukesha County Circuit Court Judge Michael O. Bohren asked Weier if she understood what the plea meant and if she agreed with the amended charge, which she said she did. Describes attack Bohren then asked Weier to testify and provide her take on the events leading up to and during the stabbing of Payton Leutner Weier pleads guilty to lessened charge in Slender Man stabbing See SLENDER MAN on Page 3
