The woman who dives into a frozen river to save a drowning child is a hero, as is the man who fights off a bear that's threatening his family. Some people, though, don't just risk themselves when the opportunity arises. Some people throw themselves at danger on a daily basis. Soldiers and police officers find themselves getting shot at, while firefighters and paramedics rush into situations where their own lives are at stake. On Wednesday, Oct. 10, a new drama about these every- day heroes premieres on NBC. "Chicago Fire" will take viewers inside Chicago's Firehouse 51, where firefighters and para- medics deal with the struggles of life and death every day. It's a struggle that hits close to home when one of their own is killed in a terrible tragedy, heaping blame and guilt on these men and women. lar city, "Chicago Fire" is the brainchild of Emmy award-win- ning executive producer Dick Wolf, of "Law & Order" fame. But he's not the only big name attached to this fiery drama. The mayor of Chicago himself, Rahm Emanuel, makes a cameo appearance in the pilot episode. "It's easier being mayor than playing mayor," Emanuel told NBC. "I told them I'd do it under one condition: the TV show is making an investment to the Firefighters Widows and Orphans Fund." It's a donation that will hope- fully spur more awareness of the sacrifices that are so often made by these front-line responders. And the mayor is in good company — "Chicago Fire" boasts a strong lineup of talent that'll be bringing the firehouse drama to the TV screen with the sensitivity that it deserves. The show focuses on the members of the Truck and the specially trained Rescue Squad — two groups that often find themselves at odds with each other under the high-stress con- ditions of the job. The man in charge of the Truck is Lt. Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer), a strong-willed man who's still coming to grips with the loss of one of his men. Spencer, a native of Australia, will be instantly recognizable to fans of the long-lived and critically acclaimed medical drama "House," in which he appeared opposite Hugh Laurie for the show's eight seasons as Dr. Filmed in and around its titu- Oliver Softs 750 ml. $5.99 Yellowtail $5.99 Hamm's 30 pack (warm) $10.99 3 Convenient locations for all your party needs! Starring opposite Spencer is Another familiar face belongs to Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg), a down-to-earth, experienced firefighter who's also a devoted family man. Eigenberg is most likely to be recognized for his TV and movie role as Steve Brady, Miranda's good-hearted husband in "Sex and the City." The man in charge of tying these at-odds elements into a cohesive team is Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker). An accomplished actor,Walker will most likely be recognized by American audiences for his role as Kareem Said in "Oz." Other members of Firehouse 51 include academy graduate Peter Mills (Charlie Barnett, "Men In Black 3"), along with paramedics Gabriela Dawson (Monica Raymund, "Lie to Me," "The Good Wife") and Leslie Shay (Lauren German, "Hawaii Five-0"). "Chicago Fire" joins a grow- ing field of first responder dra- mas that have been steadily taking over the airwaves in recent years. Although last sea- David Eigenberg as Christopher Herrmann in "Chicago Fire" son's "NYC 22" — a drama about a group of rookie cops in New York — was canceled after only a few episodes, other shows are going strong. "Blue Bloods" on CBS is critically acclaimed, while ABC's Canadian import "Rookie Blue" regularly draws a steady audi- ence. However, there hasn't been a firefighter-based show since FX's "Rescue Me" wrapped up last year. That show, which ran for seven seasons, followed fire- fighter Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary) as he battled his person- al demons in post-9/11 New York. It was well received by both critics and audiences, and brought Leary, who was better known for his work as a come- dian, four Emmy nominations for both his writing and acting. If "Rescue Me" is any indica- tion, there's an appetite for first responder dramas that take a look beyond the uniforms. That means for our customers GREATER SELECTION!!
