Try spending some time at one of Cleveland County's four wonderful nursing homes. There will be a flurry of activity around you as you watch the CNA's, LPN's directors, and other staffers busily moving about assisting and interacting with the residents. You could be fortunate enough to catch an activity director, all dressed up in a delightfully weird costume, bringing laughter to those whom she passes in the hallways. Best of all, in my opinion, "Elvis" might just be making a grand entrance through the front door to entertain the folks inside. Stop long enough to chat with the residents. You could hear a bone-tingling war story, tales of farm life before TV and computers, or even the adventures of growing up, work- ing, and falling in love in a mill village decades ago. You might even be lucky enough to meet one of the resident's husband. He'll tell you that he comes every day to help feed his wife her meals. His eyes light up with love as he tells you about this lady who has been his sweetheart and partner for 67 years. He is "…So thankful that she's not the one having to do this care- giving for me." He tells you that the nursing home is taking very good care of her. However, he also says the thing which bothers him most is that there are actually people living here whom no one ever comes to visit. He knows this for a fact because he has been coming every day for six years. Treat yourself to the pleasure of a visit in one of these wonderful facilities. Stay around a little while and experi- ence the love and beauty which, flowing so freely between residents, staff, family members, and guests, creates the aura of "HOME" which makes each of our county's Nursing Facilities so very special. Suzy Buckner Volunteer NHCAC Member A Special Treat, Just for You Do you enjoy good food and great fellowship? Would you like to meet some new friends? If so, you are invited to join the Neal Senior Center Dine Around Club for seniors age 55 and better. During the months of January-September, the Dine Around Club meets at an area restaurant on the 4th Thursday of each month at 5:00 p.m. Join us on Thursday, August 24 th as we dine at Kelly's Seafood, located at 1204 East Dixon Blvd., Shelby. Again, we will meet at 5:00 p.m. If you are interested in participating, please call the Neal Senior Center's Front Desk at 704-482-3488 to reserve seat- ing by or before Tuesday, August 22 nd , 2017. Also, a 2017 Dine Around Club Restaurant Schedule is available at the Front Desk for your convenience. Dine Tap, Tap, Tap Your Troubles Away Tap dancing has long been a part of the entertainment scene. It was a common practice to take tap dancing lessons when we were chil- dren. Many people enjoy watching tap dancing, as it is intriguing to see the dancer's ability to keep in time with the music. The Neal Senior Center is starting a class in "Beginning Tap Dancing". The big surprise is that you do NOT have to be an experienced dancer to enroll! The class is open to anyone who is interested in learning and will be taught by dance expert Laura Wheeler. The class will be held at the Neal Senior Center, begin- ning Wednesday, September 13, and continuing for six weeks until Wednesday, October 18. The class will meet each week from 1PM-2PM. The class is free, but you would need to have your own shoes that would be suitable for this type of dancing. If you happen to own a pair of tap shoes, then please bring them with you. If you do not own a pair, no worries since any shoe that has the ability to slide would be acceptable, except for running shoes. Pre-registration is required, so please call the Neal Senior Center at 704/482-3488 to pre-register. 23 Telephone Reassurance Do you, or some- one you know, live alone and have little contact with people if the answer is yes, then the "Council on Aging Telephone Reassurance Program" might be for you. This program is especially for seniors age 60 and above that would like for someone to make phone con- tact with them Monday through Friday. On these days, a volunteer will call to make sure that you are up and okay. If the volunteer does not get an answer, they will notify a contact person that will come check on you. If you are interested in this program, or would like to be a volunteer to make calls with the Telephone Reassurance Program please call The Neal Senior Center 704-482-3488. 139 E.
