Proper licensing also urged MILWAUKEE — The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is urging motorists to look twice for motorcycles and is encouraging cycle drivers to be properly licensed. Over 550,000 Wisconsin residents hold a motorcycle license or permit. Combined with warm weather, that means motorists can expect to see more motorcyclists on roadways. "We're reminding car and truck drivers to be alert for motorcycles especially at intersections, when making turns and lane changes," David Pabst, director of the DOT's Bureau of Transportation Safety, said in a news release. "At the same time, we're urging motorcyclists to always wear protective equipment, get properly licensed, and consider taking a motorcycle safety course appropriate for their skill level." According to the release, last year 82 motorcycle riders and passengers died in traffic crashes in Wisconsin. The average age of a motorcyclist involved in a fatal crash increased from 30 years old in 1992 to 48 years old in 2016, the release said. "We see far too many people riding with- out a motorcycle endorsement on their dri- ver's license," Pabst said. "It's a serious problem, and includes people who have not ridden a motorcycle for several years and start to ride again, often on a cycle that's larger and more powerful." The DOT has a mobile training facility, Transportable High-End Rider Education Facility, otherwise known as THE REF. For more information on THE REF, visit zeroin- wisconsin.gov/TheREF. Motorcyclists can obtain a motorcycle endorsement on their driver's license by passing a DOT-administered motorcycle driving skills test or by obtaining a waiver for the skills test by successfully complet- ing a DOT-approved Basic Motorcycle Rider Course, 3Wheel Basic Rider Course or the Basic Rider Course 2 for experienced rid- ers. More information can be found on the DOT website at wisconsindot.gov. — Conley News Service Motorcycles abound, DOT encourages safe driving Your weekly newspaper is run- ning obituaries and in memoriam notices to honor a loved one's memory.
