But the tale of U.K. cyber whiz Marcus Hutchins — who, in some circles, is known as Malwaretech — is very real, and he is facing charges of creating and distribut- ing a form of malware known as Kronos. Hutchins, 23, was initially slat- ed to face Magistrate Judge William Duffin Tuesday, but the arraignment has since been post- poned to Monday. U.S. Attorney Gregory Haanstad, who serves in the feder- al Eastern District of Wisconsin court in Milwaukee, has announced Hutchins is being indicted in Milwaukee on the charges. Hutchins was arrested Aug. 2 in Las Vegas amid an event known as the Defcon Hacking Conference. The apprehension came on the heels of a federal grand jury's six-count indictment against Hutchins on allegations of his role with the Kronos malware, which infected banking software. Federal officials have not stat- ed why Hutchins was facing his indictment in Milwaukee. His offi- cial residence remains in the U.K., though he worked remotely for a California-based security firm at the time of the indictment. The FBI's Cyber Crime Task Force, based in Milwaukee, led to the investigation, which could be at least part of the reason behind the venue of the indictment. In a news release announcing Hutchins' apprehension, Justin Tolomeo, an FBI special agent in charge of the investigation, said the indictment was the culmina- tion of a two-year probe.
