How did you get here so quickly? It seems like yesterday we were waving flags for the Fourth of July. Watching grass grow and get crunchy and brown while slurping ice cream to keep cool. Now the ground is cov- ered by leaves freshly fallen from trees preparing for their long winters' naps. We've traded in swimsuits for sweaters and sunburns for sinus infections. OK, so maybe I'm speaking of myself specifically on that last part. October conjures up im- ages of spooky things and silly costumes, as we discuss in this month's cover story and Emily Popek's fashion column. mlynch@thedailystar.com, (607) 432-1000, ext. 214 PUBLISHER Mitchell Lynch slewis@thedailystar.com, (607) 432-1000, ext. 235 ADVERTISING DIRECTOR Sean Lewis spollak@thedailystar.com, (607) 432-1000, ext. 208 EDITOR OF THE DAILY STAR Sam Pollak Member of The Associated Press and CNHI News Service 2 O-Town Scene Oct. 4, 2012 It's difficult not to think back fondly on younger days, when it was perfectly accept- able to dress up as a Care Bear, a pretty-pretty-pink princess covered in sparkles or a superhero with a cowl, cape and one of those plastic breastplates that makes you look like you have six-pack abs. I remember dressing up as the Queen of Hearts from "Alice in Wonderland," and I really enjoyed yelling, "Off with their heads!" at anyone that annoyed me. Sometimes I wish I could do that now without getting weird looks. As a youngish adult, things can be much more complicat- ed when selecting a costume. Rather than simple grown-up versions of Little Red Rid- ing Hood, Snow White or vampire, you get to pick from sexy Snow or sexy Red or vampire vixen. Sometimes putting a couple of holes in an old sheet seems more conducive to my level of skin- baring than the bad nurse or bad cop. I've tended to stick with things such as hippie chick with heart-shaped sunglass- es, nun with giant cross and Wednesday Addams with her headless baby doll. But not anything for years. Al- though getting to wear a pair of fairy wings, carry around a wand and slip in a pair of fake fangs still seems pretty cool to me. Perhaps all at the same time. I could be a vampire fairy godmother or something. That would make it difficult to work in my desk chair, but it would be worth it. me at arts@thedailystar.com with details of your Hallow- een events. You can find the many haunting holiday op- tions and more that our area offers this month on Pages 15-16 and 19. For many, Halloween is their favorite holiday because they get to leave their normal lives behind for one night and slip into the shoes of someone else. Or something else. It's a time for some to run amok, making mischief and playing tricks on their friends or unsuspecting bystanders under cover of night while sporting a rubber mask covered in fake blood and fur. Please feel free to email Adrienne Wise hasn't dressed up for Halloween since moving to Oneonta. The last costume she can remember wearing is that of a wicked spider queen. She likes spiders and feels bad when people kill them. She is editor of The O-Town Scene and as- sociate man- aging editor of The Daily Star. Email her at awise@thedai- lystar.com.
