Representatives of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics will hold a community forum in Cullowhee on Thurs., Aug. 10, to gather input from the public concerning the school's plans for a western campus at Morganton. The forum is scheduled for 10:30am until noon in Room 209 of Western Carolina University's Health and Human Sciences Building, located at 3971 Little Savannah Road. WCU is hosting the event, which will provide an opportunity for NCSSM Chancellor Todd Roberts and other offi cials from the school to gather feedback on the draft educational program vision plans for the new campus. In March 2016, North Carolina voters approved the Connect NC bond package that included $58 million to develop a second campus of the NCSSM. Planning began in late 2016 with the hiring of an architectural fi rm, educational program design consultants and a planning director. NCSSM offi cials expect to open their new campus in 2021 with an initial enrollment of 300 students. NCSSM is a two-year public residential high school that focuses on science, technology, engineering and math (also known as "STEM") disciplines. With a main campus in Durham, the school is one of the 17 institutions of the University of North Carolina system. The forum is part of a nine-city summer listening tour that stretches from Wilmington to Cullowhee.
