there are some experiences i regard as
quintessentially harrisburg—a ride on the
Pride, a concert at the Forum, a Senators'
game.
but you can have an authentic harrisburg
experience without making a special plan
or buying a ticket.
take lunch.
recently, i bought a few things from the
Mad Sandwiches food truck and walked
a block to the east courtyard of the state
Capitol building, which is open again after
an extensive renovation.
there, i sat at one of the little stone tables
and gobbled down an amazing carnitas
taco (and an equally amazing empanada),
surrounded by the grandeur of the
century-plus-old statehouse. Water from
the fountain shot up and, in the distance,
someone was playing music, the notes
echoing off the stone and marble.
incredible.
i also sometimes decamp to the riverfront
for lunch and watch the geese, ducks,
egrets and herons fly by, and, on days it's
open, the courtyard of the broad Street
Market, a mecca for people watching.
three different lunch spots, three
very different, yet perfect, harrisburg
experiences.
We hope that you'll consider our August
issue to be another wonderful harrisburg
experience. this month, we introduce you
to a few fascinating young people, as well
as several organizations trying to help
at-risk youth. We also have food, drink,
music, theater and several stories that will
transport you outside the city.
So, before it gets cold again, grab your
lunch, leave the office behind for an hour
and have yourself a perfect harrisburg
experience. You might even consider
taking along a copy of theburg.
