Milwaukee Water Works says it's in the "information sharing" stage with Waukesha, providing points on water chemistry, treat- ment costs, existing infrastruc- ture and costs of piping 8.2 mil- lion gallons of Lake Michigan water per day between the two cities. Jennifer Gonda, superintend- ent for Milwaukee Water Works, said the timeline is largely dictat- ed by Waukesha, and it's unclear at this time when formal negotia- tions will start and how long they could last. Waukesha officials are analyz- ing Milwaukee's proposal and expect to present findings to the Common Council later this sum- mer. A vote will be held to either give final approval to Oak Creek or open up negotiations with Milwaukee. Waukesha Mayor Shawn Reilly said the proposal from Milwaukee has made the water utility look harder at Oak Creek's proposal. He said the full analysis of both proposals should be done and ready for a vote by the end of August or early September. Oak Creek's proposal has been in Waukesha's hands since 2012, but negotiations didn't start until after the Great Lakes Compact Council gave final approval last summer. They have been in a con- stant state of back-and-forth for the past year and have now almost completed the terms and condi- tions of a 40-year contract, said Dan Duchniak, Waukesha Water Utility general manager. "It's not a simple process; it's not something we do every day.
