SANTA CRUZ SENTINEL FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 LIVE IT UP! 5 H enry Cowell Redwoods State Park is quite a trea- sure—for both beginning and experienced hikers. And it's located right in our back- yard! Although it's best known for a 40-acre grove of old-growth redwood trees, there are actually many areas to explore. First, though, let's discuss the main redwood grove, which has drawn visitors from across the globe and inspired many. As the park's official web site states, photographer Andrew P. Hill's visit to this grove in 1900 actually helped launch the Sempervirens Club and the entire redwood preservation movement. e Redwood Grove Loop Trail is an easy .8-mile hike, and the park's most popular spot. e hike's elevation change is only 30 feet. It is wheelchair-accessible, with restrooms at the halfway point. e trail starts at the visitor center off Highway 9. "It's a must-see hike/walk," says Steven Ellmore, State Interpreter I at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. "It is a section that has never been logged and contains trees well over 1,500 years old." e tallest tree in the park is 277 feet tall and about 16 feet wide. Self-guided brochures are available at the center for 25 cents. Also, there are audio tours in mp3 format available on the park's web site that can be downloaded ahead of time and then played on hikers' own devices. e park features 30 miles of hiking trails with varying terrain. For those seeking easy hikes, a couple options in additional to the Redwood Grove Loop are the Meadow-River Loop and the Observation Deck; both are approximately one mile round-trip. e Meadow-River Loop trailhead is near the main entrance. Start on the Meadow Trail, which begins right aer crossing the San Lorenzo River on the park entrance road off Highway 9.
