SANTA CRUZ SENTINEL SATURDAY, JULY 22, 2017 WHARF TO WHARF 5
"Once we made it an
exclusive event, the demand
skyrocketed," he said.
Entries sold out faster and
faster each year and that rate
continues to gain speed.
Organizers are even
considering a group
registration option. Each year,
people call the office months
before the registration time
asking how a family of seven
can register for the race.
"There's been so many people
that have called about that.
We have almost every state
covered in terms of people
coming to our event," he said.
McConville admits it's not a fully
flushed out idea yet but knows
it will be one of the bigger
talking points come 2018.
Though there are 16,000
spots in the race, it's
surprising how quickly they fill
up. While race officials can
simply throw open the digital
doors for registration each
year to let racers duke it out
for slots, McConville wants to
keep it local.
"The way I like to approach it:
Let's keep finding new ways to
allow new people a fair chance
to register," he said.
