One of the best is having her 4X4 team (with Maya McCabe, Cassie Ackemann, and Camryn Crouch) beat the school and county record, which occurred this year (during the 2017 track season). "I wouldn't have wanted to do it with any other girls," says Meck. The 4X4 is where each girl runs 400 meters. Meck is one of the two Howard Marcus Memorial scholarship winners this year. The Wharf to Wharf board selects winners of these, along with the Otis Chandler Memorial scholarships. "One of our early board members was Howard Marcus, a Capitola attorney and track and field fan who passed away years ago," says WTW board member and treasurer Mark McConnell. "He was instrumental in starting our scholarship program, and one of our scholarships is named in his honor." All current board members are very proud of the program, says McConnell, and are pleased to serve as an ad hoc scholarship committee. Meck plans to attend pepperdine university this fall, majoring in biology and running Cross Country plus indoor/ outdoor Track & Field. she should be up to the challenge, having been captain for both Cross Country and Track & Field for the past three years, usually doing the 1600 and 3200 in addition to the 4X4. "As a team we won state for D4 Cross Country, and individually I have placed sixth at state in Cross Country," says Meck. she is also a member of CsF (California scholarship Federation), and NHs (National Honors society), and was Class Treasurer and a Fashion Club member. Accomplishments like these made her application stand out to the committee. "Winners are expected to have demonstrated both academic success and athletic success in high school and to be capable of both at the collegiate level," says McConnell. Each year, Chandler and Marcus scholarships are awarded to one male and one female, who must be santa Cruz County residents. Marcus winners receive $3,000 per year for up to four years of collegiate athletic participation. Chandler scholarships are $3,000 a year for up to two years. Quinn Lydon, also an sLv High school graduate, is the other Marcus winner. His academic accolades are very impressive, including a 4.3 GpA, membership in NHs and CsF, and receiving awards from NAsA, the National Association of biology Teachers, and the stockholm Junior Water Association. Athletic achievements include 20 first place finishes and being the 2017 santa Cruz County Athletic League Champion in the 110m hurdles and the 300m intermediate hurdles. Lydon has shown incredible perseverance, which will no doubt prove invaluable during his future tenure at uC san Diego, where he will compete on the track and field team. "I won the league championship in my two main events while coming off of a football injury that ended my football season earlier that year," says Lydon. "This instilled in me that my hard work does pay off." This year, Danner pardue and Melissa Favorite were awarded Chandler Memorial scholarships. Favorite is a graduate of soquel High school. pardue, an Aptos High school graduate, plans to attend Chico state university and will this instilled in me that my hard work does pay off. — Quinn Lydon, sLv Grad and recipient of the Howard Marcus Memorial scholarship CoNtINUES oN 21
