dad coordinate with the coaches.
"The people on the race
committee he considered to
be really good friends. And
they put a lot of time into
this over the years," he said.
"Eventually it grew to the
point where they had to pay
somebody because it was a
full-time job."
The first paid race director
was Kirby Nicol, an assistant
track coach at soquel High
and friend of Thomas.'
"Ken was like a brother to me.
We were bound at the hip
through the Wharf to Wharf
race for 45 years," Nicol said.
Looking at the race and what
it's become, Josh Thomas
knows his dad never meant it
to become as big as it did. but
he also knows how much pride
his father took in the race.
"He was going to do it until
the day he died. There was
no question there. At what
capacity, obviously he was
in it until the end," Josh
Thomas said. "What they lost
in my opinion was somebody
that was so selfless and
just treated everybody with
respect."
