When it comes to building a new deck, fence or dock, now more than ever, today's busy consumers want something that's low- maintenance, high-value and will last a long time. Composite decking highlights: ■ This extremely durable material will stand the test of time, resisting splintering, splitting, cracking, warping, rotting and insect infestation while providing the look of real wood. ■ It is made from recycled wood fiber and plastic polymer composition that may have otherwise ended up in a landfill. ■ The material is easy to clean with mild detergents and water using a garden hose or pressure washer. ■ It typically comes in a variety of colors including cedar, gray, redwood and rose- wood tones. ■ This low-maintenance material never needs to be stained or treated, further reducing the cost to the consumer and toll on the environment. ■ It's quick and easy to install just like a traditional wood deck with standard wood- working tools. ■ It offers high slip resistance and anti- splinter technology for you and your family. Composite decking can be used to build fences, railings, benches, steps, caps, picnic tables and other outdoor solutions. Let's start by taking a look at the time of day. First, if you haven't been out in the heat yet for the year, acclimate yourself slowly. Go out and work for an hour and come back in, and so forth, for a day or two. Also, if you know you're going to be outside the next day and it's going to be hot, start hydrating the night before. Second, it's always cooler in the morn- ing and at dusk, so do your work then if possible. I myself get up at 5 a.m. and work until about 10 or 11 a.m. and then call it quits for the day if I can. The only thing to watch out for is that the mosquitoes are also out, so be prepared. Now, just because you're working during the cooler part of the day, remember it's still hot and take frequent breaks to hydrate. Let's not forget about your skin. Make sure you are using a good sunscreen on any areas of open skin. Don't forget areas like your ears, etc. Sun-burnt ears are no fun. Since we're talking about exposed skin, try to eliminate exposure as much as possible. Wear light-colored, loose fitting clothing with long sleeves, long pants and a hat. I myself have a hard time wearing all these clothes, so I just lather up with sunscreen. Find whatever works for you. Again tak- ing frequent breaks is still the key. About hydration: Make sure you're drinking the right stuff. Avoid coffee, any- thing with caffeine and alcohol. These are diuretics and pull water out of your body, the opposite of what we want. I recom- mend water first, but sports drinks are also an alternative. If you can, combine the two. Sports drinks have electrolytes in them which can speed up the hydration process. Now that we're prepared to keep our- selves safe, we can go out and help our plants through the heat as well. So be good to yourself so you can be of good to your plants. Happy gardening!
