Several of the businesses dam- aged or destroyed in August 2016 from looting and arson are re- establishing their roots in the neighborhood, signifying their commitment to a corner of Milwaukee that has received its share of negative headlines. The new economic reinvest- ments in Sherman Park come alongside a jury's recent ruling Dominique Heaggan-Brown, the now-fired Milwaukee Police Officer who fatally shot Sylville Smith, 23, was not guilty. The incident involving Heaggan-Brown and Smith occurred hours before the rioting began in Sherman Park last August. Heaggan-Brown is due back in court next month on charges of sexual assault from a separate incident. As Heaggan-Brown's case works its way through the local judicial system, new signs of life are sprouting up in Sherman Park. Construction began recently on BMO Harris' new Sherman Park branch, which will be at 3637 W. Fond du Lac Ave., across the street from the location that was severely damaged during last year's riots. Work on the new 2,200-square- foot building began in mid-May, and it is slated to open late this fall. Compass Properties is devel- oping the project.
