recently, i was chatting with a friend about
the media landscape around harrisburg,
how it has changed so much recently.
the Patriot-News, since going "digital
first," has morphed into a completely
different beast as PennLive. More recently,
both harrisburg Magazine and the Central
Penn business Journal have been sold to
out-of-area owners.
theburg is the last locally owned general
news publication based in harrisburg, and
that means a lot to us. it allows us to write
knowledgeably and sincerely about this
community. in fact, sometimes we feel so
deeply embedded here that we need to
leave for a few days just to refresh.
My friend and i were remarking that
what's most surprising is how theburg has
been able to hold fast to our mission as
the media ground around us has shifted.
Over our nine years of publishing, the
only thing we've tried to do is get better—
adding stories, pages and staff, working
long hours, putting every hard-earned
cent back into the product.
i hope that our July issue reflects this
commitment to quality and community.
inside these pages, you'll find the good
(happy anniversary, Fredricken!), the bad
(the area's most dangerous intersections)
and the funky (a shell shop in Paxtang?).
We're especially excited by the first
magazine stories written by our summer
interns, who have allowed us to increase
our footprint in the city.
For many people, pets are a huge part of
the community. So, every July, we focus a
bit more on our animal companions. We
believe we've put together a few stories
(and plenty of art) that highlight the
critical role that pets play in our lives.
So, i hope you enjoy the issue, with the
typical burg blend of community news,
features, commentary and events. And,
we promise, not a slideshow or listicle will
be found.
