Forty-five years later, Greve pointed to a picture of Carlin from that show and proudly said, with a smile, "I was there." Throughout the duration of Summerfest, which started Wednesday, thousands and thou- sands of fans will have a similar opportunity to relive 50 years of memories of the world's largest music festival. "The first time I went was to see George Carlin with my mom and dad," Greve said. "The part I remember is it was this dusty old stage," he added. "It wasn't anything like it is now. It was almost like a dusty parking lot. I remember sitting between my mom and my dad and when he got to that point ... there was something going on and right when he started to rattle off those words, my mom put her hands over my ears." The Summerfest Experience is near the mid-gate of the Summerfest grounds behind the water fountain. It is inside a white tent that, from the out- side, may not look like much. But on the inside, the tent is loaded with memorabilia, pic- tures and a timeline of the pro- gression of Summerfest. Right upon entry is a picture of the festival's founder, former Milwaukee Mayor Henry Maier. He envisioned creating a festival Memories flow as Summerfest celebrates 50 years See SUMMERFEST on Page 17 'Seven words' routine remembered by former West Allis man
