It's richness of words is like a cold glass of water to a thirsty soul. It describes the faithfulness of a caring shepherd throughout the life experiences of his fl ock. The psalmist identifi es the shep- herd as "my shepherd" signifying a personal relationship with the one who watches over him. This beautiful Psalm is much more than a description of a single lifetime event, but it portrays the lifelong commit- ment of a shepherd toward his sheep. He leads his fl ock beside the still waters and to the green pastures of an abundant provision. He guides each of his beloved sheep into the paths of right living and in times of physical and spiritual exhaus- tion, he restores their soul. When the end of life approaches and the fear of death threatens his sheep, he is there to comfort and guide his be- loved lamb through the darkness of the unknown valley. The psalmist is sure to remind us that the shepherd has won the victory over every enemy. Even death itself cannot conquer us, because he has blessed us with the sweet cup of salvation. He then makes a promise of a blessed relationship full of goodness and mercy throughout our earthly days. Finally, he assures each of his precious lambs that after this life is fi nished, they all will dwell in His house forever and ever. What a great comfort to know that we have a Gentle Shepherd!
