Along with our changing culture comes the temptation to change what has been accepted as the norm for decades. All change is not bad, but we must never alter long lasting tradi- tions just for the sake of change. Caution must be used as to not be "throwing the baby out with the bath water." The way we care for our dead has not been exempt from the changing of times. The rise in cremation rates is a clear in- dication that more people are not seeing the need for the body to present for a ser- vice. There is an underlying danger in this regression from having a "traditional" ser- vice. In some areas of our country "direct disposal" services are becoming more and more prevalent. As a culture, we have a tradition of cele- brating or remembering the life of someone who has made an impact in our world. Ex- perts on death and dying agree that survi- vors need some type of emotional closure when someone they love has passed away. It is sad, but as a society we are gradual- ly changing our value of life. Often this is done for the sake of convenience or eco- nomic reasons. The truth is that people will take time and spend money on what they consider most important. Yes, times are changing, but we should never allow our- selves to minimize the importance of cele- brating the life of people who have made a difference in our life. Whether it be having a gathering of friends, a memorial service or a traditional funeral service, there is a need for us to spend time remembering a loved one. Let us strive to keep the "baby in the bathtub."
