Part of it was fatigue, she said, In a news conference (quoted supporting stars, such as Jonathan Del Arco (who plays Dr. Morales),Ransford Doherty (Kendall) and Phillip P.Keene (Buzz Watson),among others. The series lead will be played by Mary McDonnell as Capt. Sharon Raydor, subbing a differ- ent strong,no-nonsense woman in for Sedgwick's departed Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh John- son. actor crossovers, are there any connections between "Roseanne"and "The Big Bang Theory"? A:The biggest connection is definitely "Big Bang Theory"cre- ator Chuck Lorre. Q:Other than the obvious telling the "Los Angeles Times" that the grueling pace of TV-series acting can be tough."That kind of volume is incredibly hard and I'm sure it took years off my life." She said she was also looking forward to stepping out of this one role and trying various differ- ent ones out for a while."It's a bit like 'Invasion of the Body Snatch- ers' to play a character for so long." Before becoming the hit-sit- com machine we know today, Lorre was a writer and producer for "Roseanne"from 1990 to 1992,the show's third and fourth seasons. So he knew Johnny Galecki, Laurie Metcalf and Sara Gilbert before casting them on "The Big Bang Theory."He also brought along a few other folks he worked with on the "Roseanne" set. However, that commitment to trying new roles led her back to a fairly grueling schedule. She starred in the recently released horror film "The Possession,"and recently wrapped two more films: the indie biographical drama "Kill Your Darlings,"about a murder that united the great Beat Gener- ation poets, and "Chlorine,"an independent romantic comedy co-starring fellow crime-show refugee Vincent D'Onofrio (for- merly of "Law & Order:Criminal Intent"). "The Closer"and "Major Crimes"— and that's a long list, as you point out — insists that the new spinoff (which pre- miered directly after its parent show's grand finale) will be dif- ferent, the similarities are unde- niable. While everyone involved with It features the same creator, James Duff, many of the same Quigley, the costume designer on both shows (a role she also fills on "Two and a Half Men"). This phenomenon isn't just limited to "Roseanne"cast- aways, though. While former "Roseanne"star Laurie Metcalf has a recurring spot as Sheldon's mother on "Big Bang,"Leonard's mother is played by Christine Baranski, who starred in another Lorre hit,"Cybill,"from 1995 to 1998. Q:Settle a bet for me:Is it true that Willem Dafoe was in a movie with Madonna? A:Any great actor, especially one as prolific as Willem Dafoe, will tell you that they can't all be gems. vorite Willem Dafoe did star in Madonna's financially disastrous erotic thriller "Body of Evidence" in 1993. And so yes, offbeat cult fa- Don Foster serves as a creative consultant on "Big Bang,"as he did on "Roseanne"— creative consultants work with executive producers (such as Lorre) on story ideas and fine-tuning scripts. Foster has worked as either a consultant, writer or executive producer on the other Lorre hits "Mike & Molly,""Two and a Half Men"and "Dharma & Greg." You may recognize the short- sleeve-over-long-sleeve T-shirt look sported by "The Big Bang Theory's"Sheldon as one also sported by D.J.Conner on "Roseanne"— if so,you're rec- ognizing the work of Mary T. It seems surprising, since at the time he was an Oscar-nominated up-and-comer who'd worked with some of the greatest direc- tors in the business — David Lynch (in 1990's "Wild at Heart"), Oliver Stone (in 1989's "Born on the Fourth of July") and Martin Scorsese (in 1988's controversial "The Last Temptation of Christ," playing no less a role than Jesus Christ). In his defense,he's not the only notable actor with a Madonna flop on his resume.Two-time Os- car winner Sean Penn starred in her 1986 comedy "Shanghai Sur- prise"(they were married at the time). She even appeared in a Woody Allen picture — 1991's "Shad- ows and Fog,"which,as has been the case with most of her films, did poorly at the box office. Have a question?
