there's an old cliché that, in the northern
climes, there are two seasons: winter
and July.
it's not quite that extreme here on the
fringe of the mid-Atlantic, but, too often,
consistent, shorts-wearing warmth
doesn't arrive until June.
this year seems to be no exception, as
a crazy-warm winter turned to a snowy
March to a mild April and back to a cool,
rainy May.
i'm betting that the weather yo-yo will end
this month, and it sure better, what with all
the things going on around here.
Welcome to our June issue, which, as
usual, is packed with things to do and
places to visit this summer.
Staying around town? there's a new
dinosaur exhibit at Whitaker Center and
the always-fun "Shakespeare in the Park."
A short drive away, and you'll discover
a season of concerts at the Ned Smith
amphitheater. if you're up for a longer
ride, lovely gardens await you in the City
of brotherly Love.
but, of course, theburg isn't just about fun
things to do. We're a community magazine
that tries to capture life around these
parts each month. So, we have stories in
this issue that range widely from kosher
resources to refugee resources, from a
neighborhood celebration to a disaster
commemoration.
here in theburg offices, summer means
something uniquely special—interns!
therefore, we'd like to welcome our two
interns, Allison Moody and Yaasmeen
Piper, who will be with us through mid-
August. We're delighted to have these
two young women on board for the start
of what i know will be long, distinguished
careers in journalism.
Anyway, you should stop paying attention
to my introductory ramblings and open
up the magazine in your hands. there are
always unexpected surprises inside.
