ZOAR MOSQUITO FESTIVAL SWEET CORN FESTIVAL AUGUST 5 - 6 AUGUST 1 -7 The Zoar Mosquito Fest is well into its fourth decade, but this year will be very similar to the 40 or so in previous years. A lot of people will get together at the Zoar United Methodist Church grounds on Old State Road 64 at the Pike-Dubois County line and have a lot of fun and good food. The Zoar Mosquito Fest will be on August 4 and 5, and they will have events unique to their festival like the Stationary Parade and whiffleball championship. The Stationary Parade starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 5. It will have blaring sirens and parade entries just like any other parade, except instead of the parade moving by as people watch, the people walk by and the parade doesn't move. The festival will open Friday, August 4, with opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. and a BBQ and fried chicken dinners followed by the Iron Mountain Band. Saturday's events start early with a breakfast. There will be a produce, flower and quilt show contested in the church basement. At 2 p.m. they will have traditional games such as sack races, three-legged races, a balloon toss and egg toss. Each year they have homemade ice cream and a new flavor, which will be announced later this summer. The Country Store in the old school building will be selling numerous baked goods, jellies and fresh herbs. Indiana is a part of the "Corn Belt," the area of the United States best known for its corn production. According to the Indiana Office of Tourism Development, almost half of all the crops grown in the state are corn. Because of its high level of corn production, Indiana is also home to several festivals celebrating the sweet corn grown in the state. Each summer, the Oakland City Sweet Corn Festival pays homage to the home-grown product. This year, the festival is tentatively slated for Tuesday, Aug. 1, through Saturday, Aug. 7, at Wirth Park in Oakland City. This family-friendly festival is sponsored by the Oakland City Lions Club and features a large parade, games, flea market, carnival rides, crafts, beauty pageant, live entertain - ment, fried chicken and pork chop dinners and, of course, corn on the cob. Admission is free. CONTINUED ON THE NEXT PAGE > AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2017 ■ EVENT CALENDAR
