TV Media Weekly | May 13 - 19, 2017 By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: "Notting Hill" is probably one of my favorite movies of all time. Can you tell me who played Hugh Grant's single friend, and where I recognize him from? A: Hugh Grant's friend Bernie, referred to at one point in the film as "the worst stockbroker in the whole world" after he loses his job, is played by Hugh Bonneville, who is probably best known today for being a little more financially se- cure in "Downton Abbey." He played Robert Crawley, the Earl of Grantham, in all six sea- sons of the smash-hit PBS/ITV se- ries. That's been by far his biggest role, but it's had a lot of competi- tion: Bonneville has more than 100 acting credits to his name, al- most all in his native Britain. Though you'd have to be a bit of an anglophile to know most of them, there are a few that are fa- miliar over here. His somewhat stodgy de- meanour, honed by years of play- ing an earl in "Downton Abbey," helped him land another of his most notable parts, playing the pa- triarch of the Brown family, whose fairly quiet life is thrown into chaos by the arrival of a homeless and danger-prone bear in the 2014 family film "Paddington." He'll be repeating the role in the aptly named "Paddington 2," due out early next year. He's also known to North Ameri- can audiences for his recent turn on the oddball ABC fantasy-come- dy series "Galavant." He played the pirate king in a couple of epi- sodes of the cultishly beloved, but now canceled, series. Despite all of his success, he'd probably be gratified to hear that you singled him out from among "Notting Hill's" impressive cast. The film, released in 1999, features both Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant at the height of their very lofty ca- reers. It also features modern-great Welsh character actor Rhys Ifans, and Tim McInnerney, one of the stars of the beloved British sitcom "Blackadder." Have a question? Email us at questions@tvtabloid.com. Hollywood Q&A By Andrew Warren TV Media F armers' markets are pop- ping up everywhere these days, and with good rea- son: They're a fantastic way to get the freshest possible ingre- dients, not to mention that meet- ing the people who've actually grown and raised the foods just makes produce seem that much tastier in the end. Plus, they're just a great way to get outdoors and spend a morning in a thriv- ing, friendly atmosphere. The pros love farmers' markets, too, and Cooking Channel has put together a fun little competition to find out which chefs can best honor the local ingredients that are unique to every market. "Farmers' Market Flip" premiered last month, and currently airs Thursday evenings on the culinary channel. In each episode, the youthful chef Jeff Mahin swings by a differ- ent farmers' market, where he meets up with two teams of culi- nary professionals to see which, over the course of a day, can best please the market's discerning pa- trons. In this week's episode, airing Thursday, May 18, Mahin is in Channel Islands, California, where he meets up with chefs Michele Ragussis and Penny Da- vidi, who are eager to challenge chefs Ben Diaz and Hugo Miran- da. First up is the Flavor of the Market challenge, where the chefs take the market's signa- ture local product and transform it into something entirely new — and sinfully delicious. In Channel Islands, that local favorite is strawberries: specifical- ly, strawberry shortcake and fun- nel cake. After transforming the sweets into exciting new dishes, the chefs move on to the Feed the Market challenge. The stakes are much higher here. After a 20-minute shop- ping spree, the teams each put together a pop-up kitchen, where they have an hour to prepare dishes that hungry shoppers get to enjoy — and judge. For the chefs competing in the seaside Channel Islands, it's no surprise that the full bounty of the sea is available right on the very docks that the local fishers use. Their dishes have to highlight this oh-so-fresh sea- food and wow the locals, with the team that pleases the most palates winning a $5,000 check.
