Collectively, Milwaukee and Waukesha counties contributed a quarter of that figure. Lisa Marshall, spokeswoman for the Wisconsin Department of Tourism, said visitor spending was on the uptick in most areas of the state in year-over-year com- parisons. Wisconsin's tourism economy increased 3.2 percent, up from the $19.3 billion in proceeds in 2015. The same upward trajectory was reported in Milwaukee and Waukesha counties, where tourism spending increased 3.93 percent and 2.94 percent, respec- tively, between 2015 and 2016. Last year, Milwaukee County's direct and indirect visitor spend- ing totaled $3.44 billion, while Waukesha County brought in $1.38 billion.
