The community can get involved in the Rodeo Association's festivities leading up to the Rodeo in July by having kids submit an entry. The contest is open to 3rd and 4th grade age children. The coloring sheet is available at Home Depot at 1890 N. Davis Road in Salinas and at the Califor- nia Rodeo Office at 1034 N. Main Street in Salinas or via download at www.carodeo. com under Events. Click on Family Events and Coloring Contest. Children can draw their favorite events in the arena at the California Rodeo Salinas, or whatever image they choose in the blank area on the entry form. Entries are due by Mon- day, June 1st at 5 p.m. and can be submitted to the California Rodeo Salinas office during business hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., through the mail slot aer hours, via mail to the California Rodeo Salinas, P.O. Box 1648, Salinas, CA 93902, or to the Home Depot store at 1890 N. Davis Road in Salinas at their Customer Service Win- dow. The California Rodeo's Marketing Committee will select 10 semi-finalists and post those entries to the California Rodeo's Facebook page in early June. Fans will vote for their favorite entry by 'liking' the picture. Three finalists with the most 'likes' will then be reposted to the page and fans will vote again via 'likes.' The entry with the most votes wins. The 3 finalists will each receive 4 tickets to the 2017 California Rodeo's Thursday July 20th performance. The grand prize winner will be announced by June 23rd and will receive 2 additional tick- ets (6 total) for Thursday July 20th, a meet and greet with a freestyle bull fighter and their artwork will be featured on the Jack in the Box Instant Replay Screen on Thursday July 20th and also on carodeo.com. Survey on Farmworker Housing Conditions and Needs A survey of farmers and farmworkers began earli- er this month, assessing current farmworker housing conditions in the Salinas and Pajaro valleys. Sponsored by a collaboration of cities and agencies in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties, the study will also recommend potential options to develop and fund farmworker housing. Updated, accurate information is crucial. The California Institute for Rural Studies is conducting the study. Monterey County Farm Bureau is encouraging those who are contacted to be responsive to requests for assistance; the information will help improve farmworker housing. The mission of the California Institute for Rural Studies is to increase social justice in rural California for all residents, building sus- tainable communities based on a healthy agriculture. The goals of their public interest research are to strengthen social justice and increase the sustainability of Califor- nia's rural communities.For further information about California Institute for Rural Studies and/or the study, visit cirsinc.org. National AG Day Luncheon On March 15th, the an- nouncement of the Jimmie Cox Memorial Scholarship Recipient was made at Her- itage Hall at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds in Wat- sonville. The scholarship was presented by John Pisturino, Vice-President, Agri-Cul- ture. American AgCredit partnered with Agri-Culture again this year to double the size of the scholarship for a total of a $4,000 scholar- ship. They received more ap- plications this year than ever before, and judges individu- ally interviewed 7 finalists. This year's recipient, Jose German Basurto, is currently a senior year at Watsonville High School who played basketball and has been an honor roll student. He is a member of the Business, Agriculture and Technol- ogy Academy (BATA) at Watsonville High. Jose will be attending Fresno State University in the Fall where he will be pursuing a career in Agricultural Systems Management. He hopes to graduate from college and return to Santa Cruz County with a better understanding of crops grown in Watson- ville. Representatives from C&N Tractors and American AgCredit presented Jose with a certificate. Another Great Local Earth Day Celebration The 11th Annual Salinas Val- ley Chamber of Commerce Earth Day Mixer was held at McShane's Nursery on April 20th. Nearly 150 guests enjoyed great weather and a sampling of local arts, culture, food and more. The center-point of the event was a dozen students from Lincoln Elementary School in Salinas that gave speeches in both English and Spanish. The students spoke about the school's ocean guardian program and strong commitment to healthy agriculture ecosys- tems in the Salinas Valley. Also taking the stage were Monterey County Supervisor Luis Alejo and Salinas Valley Chamber Chair of the Board Frank Geisler. Live music was performed by the Dan Beck Band and local violinist Eldar Hudiev.
