That slightly bit- ing chill at night and the 30 degree tempera- ture drop from earlier in the day. The leaves are changing from green to brightly colored hues of yellow, red and orange. That's right, people. Fall is coming. And I'm feeling oddly poetic about it because it's my favorite time of year. It's particularly beautiful in our neck of the woods. We get to enjoy the fresh taste of just-picked apples and newly pressed cider. And celebrate the many natural beauties and bounties of our area. Also picking out the newest styles and fashions for the season, which Emily Popek talks about in her Laygirl Fashion column on Page 5. books or selling items at their Beekman 1802 Mercantile on Main Street. On a side note, I'm so excited hear that the duo will be com- peting in the upcoming season of the reality competition show "The Amazing Race," set to start at 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, on CBS. It's an entertaining show, and will only be more so with Kilmer-Purcell and Ridge packing their humor and personality on the trip across the world. As I am not a native of the area, or even the state, I took my first visit to Sharon Springs earlier this year for the Garden Party. Down- town brings a feeling of vintage Americana, with the restored prestigious American Hotel as a centerpiece. This month's issue is about that wonderful harvest time, before the sounds of nature get muffled by the chill of snow and frost on the ground. We're focusing on Sharon Springs' Harvest Festival, which is celebrating its fourth year Friday, Sept. 14, through Sunday, Sept. 16. The small community has seen a boost in interest in recent years with the purchase of the Beekman Farm by city-boys-turned- country-folk Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Dr. Brent Ridge. They brought their media savvy to the farmland, with their popular reality show "The Fabulous Beekman Boys," books and products made from goods at the farm such as goat milk soap. mlynch@thedailystar.com, (607) 432-1000, ext. 214 PUBLISHER Mitchell Lynch slewis@thedailystar.com, (607) 432-1000, ext. 235 ADVERTISING DIRECTOR Sean Lewis spollak@thedailystar.com, (607) 432-1000, ext. 208 EDITOR OF THE DAILY STAR Sam Pollak Member of The Associated Press and CNHI News Service 2 O-Town Scene Sept. 6, 2012 They are the main organizers and public faces of the festival, as well as strong support- ers for boosting tourism in our area. I would strongly recommend attending the many events planned during the weekend. For more on those events, see Pages 12 and 13. It's easy to see how you could fall in love with the community and want to sent up shop there. Please feel free to email me at arts@ thedailystar.com with details of your fall fes- tivals and events.
