It's the same place every year. For the last several years I have not even used a locater call. I've just made my way to this area and set up about a hundred yards from where they usually are. I can't remember the last time my opening day rou- tine was different and when they were not there. This year was no different. Three toms responded but I couldn't get them any closer than eighty yards. The other day was not opening day. It was actually my fourth trip into the woods but since I had not been in a few days I decided to take my opening day approach. I quietly set up and waited until daylight. The familiar echoes of treed toms never came. They had spent the night somewhere else. For an hour after that I never heard the fi rst gobble. Then things changed. Just over the next ridge I heard one give up his location. I quickly made the trip to the ridge just above where two toms were gob- bling the woods down. I never made a sound but eased down into the woods adjacent to their position. I got set up and called with two calls to make it seem like there were two hens in the vicinity. The toms quickly responded so I shut up. I put my slate call down and refused to let one yelp ring from my mouth call. No matter how much they called, I never responded. I went quiet. They couldn't take the silence and proceeded to move my way to fi nd out where the ladies had moved to. When the sec- ond one came by, I put the bead of my gun on his head, pulled the trigger, and dropped him in his tracks. (I love when a good plan comes together.) It's amazing what silence will do. While it can hinder a mean- ingful conversation, when it comes to God, it allows us to listen more intently and can draw us closer to the place we last heard Him. It can also bring balance back to a one-sided relationship. After all, this is how most of our praying goes. We talk to God and talk to God and talk to God. And we rarely remain still and silent long enough for Him to speak and draw close to our posi- tion. We can't hear Him because our own calls have drowned his response. It amazes me that the fi rst blessing in prayer doesn't come from what we say but from where we are. Jesus said, when you pray, go into your room and shut the door. And the Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. He didn't say, the Father who hears what you say, but who sees where you are. Friend, it has been said that silence is golden. Whoever said that must have learned this fi rst lesson of prayer. It's better to show up and shut up when God is part of the con- versation. Topics covered include: Bat species found in North Carolina The many benefi ts of bats Tips and techniques on creating a bat-friendly property, including how to build and install a bat house "This is essentially a Bat 101 workshop and is ideal for people who don't know much about bats and want to learn more about these fascinating mammals," said Kelly Douglass, technical assistance biologist with the Commission. "Unfortunately, many bat species in the North Carolina are being negatively impacted by a fungal disease called White- nose Syndrome (WNS) and their populations have declined signifi cantly so we want to educate landowners on ways they can help protect bats and improve bat habitat on their properties." Space is limited and pre- registration is required by April 28. To register contact Jessica Pope, workshop coordinator, at jessica. pope@wakegov.com or 919-250-1053. Publishing Next Thursday, January 17 th By: M.A. Andrews • maandrews@rutherfordweekly.com What began on September 11, 2005 in a storefront at 601 E. Main Street in Spindale, and then to 953 US 221 Highway North, has culminated in a new building upon eight acres of land at 925 US 221 Highway North. The new building of the Rutherford Church of Christ now stands as testimony to patience, persistence, and dedication. On Sunday, January 6th, the fi rst services were held at the new permanent home of the Rutherford Church of Christ. It was a momentous occasion, as more than 80 men, wom- en, and children celebrated this special day. The congrega- tion's minister, Jim Hobbs, delivered the fi rst sermon offered within the new building, an address entitled "The Works of the Lord are Great." He emphasized that God had worked through many men, women and children of the Lord's church to make the new permanent home possible, and that "today is a day to praise God." The name given to this non-denominational congrega- tion, the Rutherford Church of Christ, derived as a result of not knowing, at the time of its original organization, where in Rutherford County its permanent location would be lo- cated. After four years in the storefront in Spindale, the fl edgling congregation came to need a larger facility, one which would include classrooms. The congregation located an empty building on US 221 North which had previously housed the Hodge-Podge Restaurant. When the decision was made to rent this facility, permission was granted by the owner to remodel the interior of the structure in order to ac- commodate the growing congregation's needs. The mem- bers went to work and made the former restaurant a place of worship. They fi nally had classrooms. After over three years at this location, the Rutherford Church of Christ was in a position to buy eight acres of land next door. Plans were drawn up and the construction began. At last, a permanent home was becoming a reality! On Sunday, January 6th, the fi rst services were conducted, and an excited assembly of members, friends, family, and guests took their fi rst tours through the sparkling new building. The new structure has a nursery for the children, several large classrooms featuring doors which can be opened for expanded use, an offi ce, and a full service kitchen. The design of the building allows for expansion, as needed, in 25 foot sections. The long-term goal for the congregation is to grow in numbers to between 150 and 175 members, and from this point plant the seeds for a new congregation in another section of the county. The Church of Christ uses the New Testament as its guide. It patterns itself after the fi rst century church described in the New Testament. The minister of the Rutherford Church of Christ, Jim Hobbs, retired from secular work at the age of 54 and enrolled in the North Carolina School of Biblical Studies in Winston-Salem. He graduated in 2009 and has been with the local congregation since his graduation. For each member of the Rutherford Church of Christ, it has been a long seven year journey, yet one which has been most worthwhile. Seven Years Later...
