Any new pro- gramming to the cabler's ros- ter has a lot to live up to, and there's no doubt that the showrunners for "The Son," with its A-list headliner and high-caliber source material, are well aware of this fact. The new series is based on the novel of the same name by Philipp Meyer — a New York Times bestseller and a fi- nalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Meyer also had a hand in creating and develop- ing the TV series, the cast of which is led by 007 himself, Pierce Brosnan ("GoldenEye," 1995). "The Son" premieres Saturday, April 8, on AMC. Last summer's "Hell on Wheels" finale left a Western- shaped hole in the cabler's schedule and room for a new beard-sporting, gun-toting, cowboy-hatted antihero on Saturday nights — though word on the street is that this one's a lot meaner than An- son Mount's Cullen Bohan- non. "The Son" is a sweeping drama spanning 150 years and three generations of the McCullough family and its rise to becoming one of the richest and most powerful families in the state of Texas. For the most part, the family's success is thanks to patriarch Eli McCullough (Brosnan), whose story is the foundation for the series. The show incorporates two concurrent time periods, be- ginning with Eli's boyhood in 1849 and jaunting forward 60-odd years to 1915, show- ing how the events of his youth affect the ruthless and driven man he becomes. As a boy, Eli (Jacob Lofland, "Mud," 2012) loses his home and his family during a Co- manche attack on their fron- tier homestead. Eli is taken hostage and held by Tosha- way (Zahn McClarnon, "Far- go"), a Comanche war chief who sees warrior potential in the boy. Toshaway indoctri- nates Eli into the tribe, even- tually coming to see him as a son. Flash forward a few de- cades to see a decidedly more grizzled Eli, who has grown into a powerful and notori- ously brutal landowner, and is now struggling to maintain his family's ranching empire during the South Texas Bandit War. Determined to keep the family in a position of wealth and power, he turns his atten- tions to oil tycoonery, apply- ing to his business dealings the ruthless worldview and iron fist he acquired during his Comanche upbringing. "He's a man shaped by the losses in his life," Brosnan said of his character in an in- terview for Austin Monthly. "The hardship of loss of fami- ly, the struggle it takes to keep a family going, and the desire and the want for looking for- wards, that's the man that Eli is. ... He's lived his entire life in violence, surrounded by war all his life. He knows that he can't just wish the violence away; you have to control it." The McCulloughs aren't the only proud and powerful fam- ily in the Wild West of Texas. Separating their land from Mexico are the Spanish-de- scended Garcias, led by Pedro (Carlos Bardem, "Cell 211," 2009) and his eldest daughter, Maria (Paola Nunez, "Reina de corazones") . As the Bandit War raids intensify, the Gar- cias' Spanish heritage and proximity to the Mexican bor- der make it increasingly diffi- cult to keep the peace that the diplomatic Pedro wants to maintain. Pedro's son-in-law is all fired up to fight for the Mexi- can army and is deeply dis- trustful of the powerful Mc- Cullough family. Meanwhile, Maria is re-establishing an old friendship with Eli's youngest son, Pete (Henry Garrett, "Pol- dark"). Like Maria, Pete is not a hard person; he loves his fa- ther, but he's far from sharing his dark views of humanity. Regardless, he and Maria both find themselves swept up in the escalating violence encroaching on their homes. Pete's daughter, Jeannie (Sydney Lucas, "The Skeleton Twins," 2014), however, has a lot of her grandfather in her. Sharp and observant, the girl takes her grandfather's close mentoring to heart, becoming the ruthless CEO of the oil empire he started when she was a child. Rounding out the Mc- Cullough clan are Sally (Jess Weixler, "Teeth," 2007), Pete's wife and Jeannie's mother, and Phineas (David Wilson Barnes, "Capote," 2005), Eli's oldest son. The two maintain a close friend- ship, and Phineas, a lawyer and the manager of the Mc- Cullough fortune, is the linch- pin of the family. He may be a strong and comforting pres- ence for his assorted family member, but Phineas has his personal struggles to deal with as a gay man in a time and place where homosexual- ity was a capital crime. "The Son" marks the return to TV after almost 30 years of chiefly big-screen roles for Brosnan, and that alone will be a reason to tune in for many fans of the Irish-born "Remington Steele" actor (his dubious mastery of a Texan accent aside). Tune in Satur- day, April 8, for the premiere of "The Son," airing on AMC. Here comes 'The Son': Pierce Brosnan stars in AMC's new Western Featurestory
