Clay and Lilly Parker 2017 Red Bluff Round-up The Chamber of Commerce Round-up Committee is proud to announce the Parkers as this year's Parade dignitaries! Clay and Lilly Parker have been involved in the commu- nity their whole adult lives. Lilly was born and raised in Te- hama County and was first introduced to the Round-up as a child, when her father, Charlie DeFrates, was an announcer at the rodeo. Lilly retired after 31 years of employment with the County, the first 17 years as a Dispatcher at the Sheriffs' Office and then 14 years with the Department of Child Support Services. Clay moved to Tehama County in 1981 to work at the Sher- iff's Office and after working 30 years in Law Enforcement, the last 12 years of his career as the Tehama County Sheriff/ Coroner, Clay retired in 2011. Clay was then elected to the Red Bluff City Council in 2012, served as Mayor in 2015 and 2016 and then was re-elected to the City Council in 2016. In 2009, members of the Red Bluff Round-up Committee approached Clay and Lilly and mentioned that participants of the rodeo had a bad impression of Red Bluff because of alco- hol related incidents. Clay and Lilly agreed to start a shuttle service during rodeo weekend so that the contestants could enjoy themselves and not worry about having to drive. So the first year started with a telephone and service truck donated by Growney Motors and the program was a huge suc- cess. In that first year, Clay and Lilly also had to borrow a van from Clay's sister and brother-in-law (Sherrie and Roger Wei- gel) and it was obvious that more vehicles would be needed if the program was to continue. The "Safe Ride" project now consists of 3 vans and 3 sets of drivers. The drivers are all volunteers, the telephone is still donated by Growney Motors and the 3 vans are provided by the Round-up Association. All rides are provided free to con- testants and their families on Friday and Saturday. To date, the "Safe Ride" project has provided over 4,000 rides during the Round-up to contestants and attendees. Some of that success has to be attributed to the cooperation of the local law enforcement agencies, businesses, the Round- up Association and the volunteer drivers. Clay and Lilly have supported the community by being in- volved in the following groups/organizations: (Partial List) Tehama County Jr. Livestock Auction Buyers, Red Bluff Buccaneers Sponsors and Announcers, Police Activities League Board of Directors, Founders and Coaches of the Rancho Tehama Junior Giants Baseball Program, Red Bluff Kiwanis Club, United Way of Tehama County Board of Direc- tors, United Way of Northern California Board of Governors, Salvation Army Board of Directors, Alternatives to Violence Board of Directors, Judges for the Chili Cook-off and Judge for the Red Bluff High School Mr. Spartan Contest. Clay and Lilly are also members of the Red Bluff Police De- partment's Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) program and have donated over 1800 hours to the Police Department. Congratulations to Clay and Lilly Parker, the 2017 Round- up Parade Grand Marshals!
