he wreck of the ship John Minturn off Mantoloking over 170
years ago is among the most significant events in Jersey Shore
maritime history. The shipwreck, and several others that year, so
shocked the nation that it brought about the creation of the U.S.
Life Saving Service, which eventually became the U.S. Coast Guard.
Here the story is told in the form of historical fiction by author
and artist Jill DeFelice.
WRECK OF THE SHIP JOHN MINTURN,(CAPT. STARK) ON THE COAST OF NEW JERSEY IN THE TERRIBLE GALE
OF FEB. 15TH, 1846, 3 O'CLOCK A.M. WITH 51 PERSONS ON BOARD. By this melancholy disaster 38 persons
were drowned or frozen to death. Among the lost were Capt. Stark, wife, and two children, the Mate,
