WELCOME SPRING! www.jerseyshorevacation.com • www.jerseyshorebooks.com Subscriptions and Book Orders, Toll Free: 888-22-SHORE elcome to the spring edition of JERSEY SHORE, the magazine celebrating the Jersey Coast in Ocean and Monmouth counties. Spring at the Shore is a time of renewal and rebirth, a time of pleasure and relief for senses weary of winter's limited palette. We are renewed with colors, scents, and sounds, and the mind is refreshed and given to more upbeat thoughts. Spring is often a busy time at the Shore, and JERSEY SHORE Magazine and JERSEY SHORE Publications Online are designed to bring you a wealth of information to help make life more enjoyable "down the Shore." If you're a local resident or a long-time visi- tor, you may find things you haven't discovered or be reminded of offerings you may have forgotten. When using these resources, you'll find a myriad of information to make your time at the Shore more rewarding and exciting. In addition to our numerous guides, this issue's feature articles once again highlight many of the on-going themes that define this magazine—the unique people, places, history, and natural world that make up our lives at the Jersey Shore. "The Wreck of the Ship John Minturn," an historical fiction by Jill DeFelice, tells the story of the tragic and infamous 1846 shipwreck that brought about the creation of the U.S. Life-Saving Service, which eventually became the U.S. Coast Guard. Recently, while doing genealogical research, DeFelice discovered that two of her distant cousins were aboard the Minturn and died in the wreck. A sidebar on this research sheds some new light on what happened that fateful night. In "Their Stories Are Not Silent," writer Jill Ocone visits the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans' Memorial and Vietnam Era Museum in Holmdel. The memorial is a tribute to the New Jersey residents who made the ultimate sacrifice, and the museum relates the history of the war as well as a record of the historical era at home. This is one of the most moving and important places to visit in our two counties. "Sleeping Among the Dunes" by Christine Menapace profiles Sandy Hook's first vacation rental at one of the restored buildings on "Officer's Row" at Fort Hancock. With all that Sandy Hook offers, this beautifully restored, historic building is one of the most unique places to stay at the Jersey Shore. This issue's "Beachcomber" section features the Lakewood BlueClaws, including a schedule of their games, theme nights, promotions, and new concert series. There's also a feature on Party Boat Fishing, one of the iconic "things to do" at the shore, with tips, a guides to the local catch, and a directory of the boats in Ocean and Monmouth counties. Our "Jersey Shore Foodie" section profiles Beach House Brewery in Belmar, where they're brewing craft beer from the Jersey Shore for the masses. Capping off the issue on our "Home Port" page is "New Joisee," a humorous essay by long time contributor Christine Menapace, who has finally learned how to embrace her inner Jersey Girl. On our cover and throughout our pages, we are proud to present paintings and photo- graphs by the Shore's most talented artists and photographers. This edition's cover, "Sea Girt Gazebo," was created by Paula Kolojeski, one of the finest and most beloved artists of Jersey Shore subjects. You can feel the spring in the air as you imagine walking by the beach roses up to the gazebo on the boardwalk at Sea Girt's beach. Throughout our guides, you'll find many places to go and things to do. Our Calendar of Events and Theater & Concert Events sections will guide you through the cultural happenings of the spring season in the two counties. Our guides include Area Towns, Attractions and Activities, Parks and Recreation Areas, Historic Sites and Museums, Lighthouses, Public Golf Courses, Farmers' Markets, and more. You'll also find guides to Accommodations, Stores and Shops, Art Galleries, Home & Garden, Realtors, and Dining Out & Food among others. Also inside is our Catalog of Books about the Jersey Shore.
