The week-long trip con- The First Baptist Church sisted of jobs such as putting siding on a house and build- ing a foundation for a fam- ily whose house had burnt to the ground 12 years ago. However, the jobs did not stop there. The week the group had gone, a terrible storm of 90 mph winds had gone through taking out most of West Virginia's power, wa- ter, and gas. The FBC group worked closely with the Na- tional Guard in delivering food and water and prepar- ing loads of food to be taken to different counties in West Virginia. Several members of the FBC team had police es- corts in taking food through- out the different counties in West Virginia. The group had a blessed time and prais- es God for what they could do to serve Him! The agency will have a spe- cial sign-up to assist drought- stricken producers through the WHIP with a deadline for application of August 20. The local contact number is 354- specific set of practices that can address wildlife habitat and drought resource con- cerns. Examples of practic- es include deferred grazing through access control, conservation crop rotation, cover crops, forage and bio- mass planting and water- ing facilities. Several sup- porting practices are also allowed and include ponds, pumps, pipeline, wells and other similar practices. The purpose of the WHIP sign-up is to protect wildlife habitat by providing wild- life access to cover and wa- ter during fall and winter, and allow pastures to recov- er from the drought accord- ing to Hardisty. Hardisty said she was also concerned because drought- stressed crops did not use the applied nitrogen fertil- izer, which may now be lost due to rain. WHIP funds can help provide cover crops to tie up these nutrients, mak- ing them available for the next crop. "This saves farm- ers money and protects wa- ter quality, along with wild- life benefits," according to Hardisty. Pike County landowners and producers can make ap- plication and find out more about the program require- ments by visiting the local USDA-NRCS field officer or go to www.in.nrcs.usda.gov. drought.html. newsworthy?
