TV Media Weekly | February 11 - 17, 2017 By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: Last week I saw a TV program about the people who come into emergency rooms and how they are treated. Can you help me find it? A: I can probably help you find it, but I can't necessarily tell you the name. If it sounds like I'm speaking in riddles, I'm not, I'm just playing the averages: If you're looking for a reality show set in an emergency room, chances are you'll find it on Dis- covery Life. Based on your description, you're probably thinking of one of three shows. "Trauma: Life in the E.R." ran from 1997 to 2004 on TLC, and now airs in syndica- tion on Discovery Life. "Untold Stories of the ER" debuted on TLC in 2004 and still airs there today, but also airs in reruns on Discovery Life. "Emergency Room: Life + Death at VGH" is an ongoing series produced by The Knowledge Network in Can- ada, but airs in the U.S. on ... you guessed it. Q: What have the two stars of "The Killing" done since? I thought they were both great. A: You'll be happy to hear that Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman have both landed on their feet since "The Killing" ended in 2014, with major roles in both big- and small-screen hits. The pair of them switched to film first. Enos landed a major role in the hit melodrama "If I Stay" in 2014, while in the same year, Kinnaman got the enviable task of starring in the remake of "Robocop," which, though it flopped domestically, was a smash hit on the international market (perhaps in part thanks to his hometown crowd back in Sweden). Kinnaman's tastes seem to lean in the action-blockbuster direction, since he also had a role in last year's giant "Suicide Squad," however he also re- turned to television last year for a brief arc in the hit series "House of Cards." Some people just want to stick with what they know, never moving outside of the comfort zone of the foods that they grew up with. For former "Jersey Shore" personality Vinny Guadagnino, that person in his life is his mother, Paola, but that's about to change. He's been taking her on a cross-country culinary road trip over the past few weeks, and getting her to try some of the distinct regional foods that can be found in every little cor- ner of America. Ending on a fitting date for the loving family, "Vinny & Ma Eat America" wraps up with a two-episode finale Valentine's Day, Tuesday, Feb. 14, on Cook- ing Channel. So far, their road trip has tak- en them from coast to coast and to places in between. Paola immigrated to Staten Island from Sicily when she was 10 years old, and has never really stepped out of her comfort zone of homemade Italian cuisine. At the first stop on their road trip, though, her son got her to check out the foods in one of the "weirdest" cities in the country: Austin. There, she fell in love with a weird but delicious dish: big juicy burgers served on doughnut "buns." Then, the lifelong pasta mak- er tested her know-how by making an entirely new kind of noodle: hand-pulled Asian ones. In Tuesday night's two-epi- sode finale, Vinny and Ma hit up Nashville and New Orleans, where they'll be sampling cat- fish and frog legs before ending their trip on a sweet note at the very place where bananas fos- ter — a sugary dish that's a Big Easy specialty — was invented back in 1951. Keen-eyed Cooking Channel watchers might recognize the mother-and-son duo in "Eat America." The pair of them, along with Vinny's Uncle Ange- lo, were the runner-up team in this past summer's season of "The Great Food Truck Race." There, though, they stuck firmly to Italian food, but it seems that Vinny's Ma has got- ten a taste for travel — and is feeling a bit more culinarily ad- venturous. "Vinny & Ma Eat America" goes out with a two- episode finale Tuesday, Feb. 14, on Cooking Channel.
