But a series of challenges — including a public safety building officials have deemed as functionally obsolete — could bring changes in the years ahead. County officials are in the midst of a multi- phased process of exploring how to most effec- tively and efficiently use the aging structure. The heart of the discussion focuses on the public safety building within the complex. It could be razed and replaced with a 10-story facility. Cost estimates for that specific project have hovered between $185 million and $214 million. Additionally, County Executive Chris Abele and his staffers have floated other scenarios amid the exploratory process, including sell- ing or leasing portions of the courthouse and renovating areas that would be preserved.
