Windy City law: While "Law
& Order," one of NBC's flagship
shows, wrapped up for good in
2010 after 20 seasons, its spinoff,
"Law & Order: SVU," is still going
strong. The long-swirling rumors
of a revival of the original series
have died down lately, perhaps
because of the pending premiere
of a new courtroom drama in the
peacock network's growing Chi-
cago franchise. In fact, the two le-
gal series are about to collide in a
surprising way.
"Chicago Justice," the fourth
show in NBC's Windy City fran-
chise, which premieres Sunday,
March 5, is already amassing an
impressive cast, including a guest
star who has earned his legal
chops. Richard Brooks starred in
the first three seasons of "Law &
Order" as assistant district attor-
ney Paul Robinette, and he's step-
ping back into that character's
shoes for one of "Chicago Jus-
tice's" early episodes.
It isn't the first time that
Brooks has reprised the role, ei-
ther. He was also an occasional
guest star throughout "Law & Or-
der's" run, reappearing in 1996,
2005 and 2006.
"Chicago Justice" stars Joelle
Carter ("Justified"), Philip Win-
chester ("Strike Back"), Monica
Barbaro ("UnREAL"), Carl
Weathers ("Arrested Develop-
ment") and "Chicago P.D."
alumni Daniel Craig Baker and
John Seda as the investigators
and prosecutors in Cook County,
Illinois.
Much like the other members
of the Chicago franchise, and like
the Law & Order dramas that
came before it, "Chicago Justice"
depicts the lives of the city's legal
experts as they juggle politics and
media while working to bring jus-
tice to all within a system that of-
ten feels like it's working against
them.
Brooks's appearance isn't the
only "Law & Order" connection
to be found in the latest Chicago
drama: the older procedural's
DNA can be found all over the
new. Last year's backdoor pilot
saw Lorraine Toussaint ("Rose-
wood") reprising her "Law & Or-
der" role of attorney Shambala
Green, while "Chicago Justice's"
showrunner, Michael S. Cher-
nuchin, was a longtime producer
for "Law & Order" and several of
its spinoffs.
