Karen Simek was killed in what Milwaukee police believe was a robbery that occurred at about 6 a.m. in the 700 block of South 12th Street. Milwaukee Police Sgt. Timothy Gauerke, who confirmed the department's belief that a robbery occurred, told Conley News Service Tuesday night that police are work- ing to identify and arrest a suspect. Simek's husband, Kevin Sasse, said she enjoyed hiking, biking and the trips they would take to America's national parks. He said Yellowstone, which they visited not too long ago, was her favorite park. He said she was also a big fan of Girl Scouts of the USA, in which she participat- ed while growing up. Sasse said he and his wife both grew up in Waukesha County and they moved to Oconomowoc in 2003, in part because he worked in Madison and she worked in Milwaukee. Simek worked for 11 years at Garden- Fresh Foods in Milwaukee. "Obviously, she had a lot of work friends at Garden-Fresh and that was certainly a large part of her life," Sasse said. As a food technologist, Simek was responsible for food and ingredient labeling. "She loved her work. She loved working with food and developing recipes and work- ing with the chefs there," Sasse said. In a Tuesday statement, Garden-Fresh Foods Chairman Tom Hughes said: "This morning, we are devastated and heartbro- ken over the loss of a long-time member of our Garden-Fresh Foods Family. Our sincer- est condolences go out to the family. We keep them in our thoughts and prayers on this very difficult day and share their grief over this tragic and terrible incident." Conley News Service WAUKESHA — The suspect in Sunday morning's shooting incident at a Brookfield hotel during his girlfriend's birthday party was the subject of a restraining order she took out against him and was not to possess firearms or dangerous weapons, and signed a bond to that effect barely a week before the shooting, online court records show. But instead, Nico Swanagan, 19, showed up at a birthday party for his girlfriend, Amari Johnson, at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Brookfield on Saturday night, got upset with several men there, attacked Johnson, and, when people tried to pull him off of her, pulled out a gun and appeared to be shooting at random, with one shot strik- ing his own cousin in the abdomen and another grazing a woman's buttocks, a criminal complaint against him said. Swanagan, 19, of Milwaukee, was charged Wednesday in Waukesha County Circuit Court with three counts of attempt- ed first-degree homicide, two counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, criminal damage to property and bail jump- ing. He was ordered held on a $250,000 cash bond, with conditions that the have no contact with any victims or wit- nesses in the case. Court Commissioner Thomas Pieper entered a protective order involving five people that Swanagan is to to have no contact with, including Johnson. He is due in court again Feb. 8. According to the criminal complaint, about 25 people were at the hotel Saturday night for a birthday party for Johnson, and Swanagan arrived at some point. Witnesses reported hearing as many as six shots, with hotel management claiming the room sustained at least $4,000 in dam- age, the complaint said. Submitted photo Karen Simek of Oconomowoc was shot and killed in Milwaukee Tuesday morning in what police believe was a robbery. Simek and her husband, Kevin Sasse, are seen in a 2015 photo.
