Serving Red Bluff High School since 1901 Volume CXVII Issue 8 Bye Bye Man, page 4 "Nobody's approached me about the petition..." -Mr. Tambini Julissa Villalobos Editor-in-Chief Bluffer The Varsity Boys Basketball, page 3 Recently the tensions have been rising between the seniors and the senior portfolio included in the contract introduced late last year as a requirement to participate in the graduation ceremony. They're petitioning against the Senior Contract and the Senior Portfolio in efforts to reinstate the discontinued tradition of 'Senior Make a Difference'. The tradition was removed due to the fact that community service is now a requirement for graduation, and 'Senior Make a Difference' was essentially more community service. Nonetheless, some seniors believe that the tradition was a wonderful opportunity for the students to improve the community with their help before they depart. Gabriel Fergoso, senior claimed, "I started the petition against the senior contact and portfolio because other seniors and I felt that both were a waste of time. We felt that instead Mr. Tambini continued with, "I'm glad they're protesting and using their constitutional rights, but I wish the leaders of the protest would give me the opportunity to discuss it with them." Another senior, Kenzie Colgate, against the contract ex pr e s se d , "I believe that it's not okay that we aren't bringing our community together one last time as a class." C o l g a t e a l s o mentioned that there are a lot of other seniors who "don't speak up about their disagreement, so I'm helping their voices be heard by speaking for our senior class along with the others who helped start this petition." Last Thursday during a break there was a senior class meeting where they collected "over 130 signatures just in those 15 minutes during break." Mr. Tambini reasoned, "The of doing the contracts and portfolios we should be giving back to our community that we have grown up in, and grown to love." Fergoso continued with, "I couldn't wait to become a senior and do something amazing for my community and 'Senior Make a Difference' allows our class to come t o g e t h e r one last time and do s o m e t h i n g t r u l y spectacular for our community." However, administration isn't aware of the reasons behind the protest. Mr. Tambini, the Red Bluff High School principal, said, "Nobody's approached me and nobody has explained anything to me." Seniors claim they haven't presented anything due to the fact that they want to make sure everything is organized and presentable before they say anything. senior portfolio What's the purpose of NDAFW? 1. Resume seniors petition contrAct January 27, 2017 N.D.A.F.W. shatters myths about drug use Who's their targeted audience? What change would they like to see? Which activities take place? The National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week is important due to the fact that they strive to break many myths with scientific facts surrounding drugs and alcohol. It takes place from the 23rd to the 29th of January. Adolescents spend hours on watching TV, movies, listening to music, and surfing the Internet, however those devices also expose them to false information about drugs and alcohol. The NDAFW isn't just a local event. It focuses on teenagers and children around the nation. For elementary students, they primarily center on the importance of the brain and how scientists handle drug use. Substance abuse obviously has negative impacts on the entire body, but it's critical make young students realize that it also has the power to destroy the mind. Ulanda Hinkston, Project Coordinator, said, "We want students to learn how science has advanced our understanding of drugs and drug abuse and to use that knowledge to protect themselves and their loved ones from the harm caused by drugs." Since young people are still susceptible dangers, they also need to understand the consequences drugs bring. As the Project Coordinator of the Tehama County Drug- Free Community Coalition, Ulanda Hinkston mentioned that she, "works with local schools to help plan and organize activities." Those focus on poster displaying, morning announcements, in-class discussions and guest speakers. Myths and facts about drug use are being posted on the Daily Bulletin on the RBHS page. 2. Cover Letter 3. Two Letters of Rec contract is nothing out of the extraordinary. I don't want kids to get lazy and it's not about penalizing anybody." He believes that it's beneficial to go through the practice of the senior portfolio so when the opportunity comes, students are prepared. He said, "I think it's something that helps students," and it's also approved by the school board. In addition, the school board has the power to withdraw the senior contract. Rylee DuFrain, senior, said, "We're taking it step by step to make sure we're doing [the protest] the right way." She continued with, "Our next plan of action is to meet with the students in the senior class who volunteered to help us and start working on steps." So for those who don't sign the senior contract will not participate in the graduation ceremony. As Mr. Tambini put it, "The ceremony is a privilege, and those who disagree with this can talk to me." However, students will still receive their graduation diploma even if they don't sign the contract. 5. Business/Community 6. Portfolio Review 7. Schedule Exit Interview 4.
