Wildlife Resources Commission is offering a "Leader Building" workshop for fl y fi shing anglers of all skill levels at the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education on Jan. 20. The workshop, which is free, will run from 10 a.m. to noon and is open to participants 12 and older. Under the direction of the center's fl y-fi shing instructors, participants will learn how to choose the weight and length of leaders, as well as when and under what conditions to use a certain leader, for more effective fl y fi shing. Participants will construct both furled and hand-tied leaders that they can take home with them. All materials are provided. "The fl y fi shing leader, along with the tippet, is a nearly transparent transition from the end of your fl y line to your fl y, and selecting the right leader in terms of weight and size, and under what conditions, is as essential as selecting the right fl y," said Lee Sherrill, program coordinator at the Pisgah Center. "This workshop is ideal for both novice fl y- fi shing anglers, as well as those who want to learn more about this important, yet often overlooked aspect of fl y fi shing." Sign up for the workshop online (www.ncwildlife. org/pisgah). In addition to the Leader workshop, the Commission offers group programs on a variety of topics for 10 or more people who call to schedule a program. Groups can schedule the date, time and topic of the program. For more information on group programs or the public programs listed above, call (828) 877-4423. The Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education is located near Brevard, just south of Asheville, by the Davidson River in Transylvania County. The center features nature trails and fi ve large aquariums representing aquatic mountain habitats. The center is adjacent to the Bobby N. Setzer State Fish Hatchery, where trout are raised in 54 raceways. The center is open Monday through Saturday from April through November and Monday through Friday from December through March. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. For more information on the Wildlife Commission's four wildlife education centers and other activities and events, visit www.ncwildlife. org/learning. Broadway St., Forest City FAST FAST FAST FAST WAY WAY WAY WAY ©Community First Media Community First Media SPORTS SPORTS I can remember sitting on the couch. I was about four and I saw Clemson running down the hill, wearing orange jerseys and hearing Tiger Rag play as it was all set in motion. Right then, I chose Clemson and I never stopped. Clemson is the current National Champions of college football!!! It becomes the second time since 35 years ago when Chuck and Rod McSwain helped Clemson get to that pinnacle. Another Chase Trojan was apart of last Monday night's game in Carlos Watkins. All Watkins did was post six tackles and gain a tackle for loss in the title game. Watkins stock has only rose over the past few weeks and leaves a champion. He would have left a champion regardless with staying in school and achieving so much as a Tiger. The Spindale Fire Chief's grandson, Jay Guillermo also played a huge part as the starting center. Hindsight, there is a lot to be said for Dabo Swinney. Nobody, but his players, staff and himself truly believed that they could get the job done. Swinney is a great recruiter, motivator and preparer of the game. The media certainly didn't believe in him or else tried to take him down in the process. As a Tiger supporter all my life, I was speechless, numb and more than excited. It one of the few things I had been hoping to see in my lifetime. Congrats to Carlos, Jay and all of the Tiger faithful who fi nally got to see a dream come true for those who missed out back in 1981. NFL Playoffs This past weekend, I went 4-for-4. Just three more NFL games left this season as two Conference Championships will be decided come Sunday 1/22/17. Green Bay at Atlanta Looking for a shootout, well here we go! Both teams are stellar offensively and have gotten better defensively as the season has progressed. Matt Ryan has been the consensus MVP choice for 2016, but this Aaron Rodgers guy is making a strong case over the last ten weeks. Comparison: Ryan has over 500 more yards thrown, a 13-point better QB rating and a four percent better completion rating. Rodgers has two more touchdowns and 28 more completions. Both are living up to the expectations in the playoffs as well. Since Green Bay has a ton of injuries, I'd almost pick Atlanta...but nope. Packers roll by 31-28. Pittsburgh at New England Another great matchup! It's no surprise that these two are deciding the AFC. I see no way that New England stops Pittsburgh's big three in Bell, Brown and Roethlisberger. Besides, this is where New England will miss Gronk the most. If it's not Alabama's year in college football, why does it have to be New England's in the NFL? I know this game is in Foxboro but... Pittsburgh 30-21. NASCAR No doubt about it, when Carl Edwards decided to step away from being a NASCAR driver this past week, it certainly shocked the sport. However, with Edwards, 37, he felt like he had done it all other than to win a Cup Championship. He was less than 10 laps from the top prize back in November, but crashed out while holding the lead. Apparently, Edwards feels like there is more than just driving a race car. It does take a lot of time and commitment to be a top NASCAR driver. He is a family man, still lives in Missouri and it does make some sense. If Edwards doesn't have the fi re to go after a championship and is happy with what he has done in his career, then I don't blame him. He is doing just fi ne with all of the earning from NASCAR and endorsement deals. It's kind of sad in three ways. I remember the story of when Edwards was going around the garage and giving out his business cards in hopes of landing a ride. Secondly, he came oh-so-close twice of winning the Cup Championship. Lastly, a friend of mine, (Anthony) whose dad was a big Carl Edwards fan (Cecil Toney) and Ford guy for that matter always found time to chat. Usually, I would see Cecil in the Shakeshop. Anyhow, Cecil died a few years back, but I do miss the NASCAR chats and whether Edwards would win a title. I was hoping this past November that I could of said...the 2016 Carl Edwards Championship was for Cecil. Well, Edwards gave it a good run, bud! My friend had located a few shooter bucks and invited me to join him. I had a great visit but left without pulling a trigger. It was 4 days of cat and mouse. Wherever I hunted, the bucks showed up at a different location. I chased them until my days ran out. The fun and camaraderie were of the Boone and Crockett size. These will be great memories. I was however, able to take a nice doe at home before the season offi cially end- ed. The summer sausage and meat sticks that I will enjoy this year will be a tasty reminder of another year of deer hunting in the books. My expectations for this season were not met. They rarely are. I wonder sometimes why I don't lower them. It seems it would be so much easier and would offer me so much more happiness and sense of achievement. But I can't. I mean I really can't. I'm not sure why. I don't think it's pride. If it were, I would think I would be more concerned about just getting something on the ground. I do know I'm not as keen on dragging deer to my truck as I used to be when I was younger. It's work, and the prize needs to be worth the effort. And yet my expectations remain at a distance beyond my ability to change. As we move into a new year, I am absolutely positive that my expectations are greater than what probably will occur. But be- cause I can use the word "probably" I keep setting my standards high. I have just enough odds to keep me hoping for something that is greater than I have known. I am also absolutely positive there are many, many people whose expectations are that this next year will hold more hurts and diffi culties, just like last year. While I see hope, they see hopelessness. Many of these good people are not without some hope, it's just that the past has been so diffi cult and the issues still remain, they have given in to honest pessimism. If you are one of these individuals I want to offer a prayer for you and ask that all those reading would do the same. "Lord, I pray right now for those reading this whose circumstances seem hopeless. I pray for those who see the next year as one with more and greater diffi culties. I ask at the very moment they read these words, that a sense of peace would fi ll their mind and body and that it would be so great they cannot deny you have seen their predicament and heard their prayer. Give them Your peace that passes their understanding and let it give them a trust in You they have never known. Amen" Will you repeat these words with me? There is someone in your life that needs this right now. And if you are the one who is the recipient of this peace, I will pass on your thanks for these outdoorsmen and outdoorswomen who believe in the power of prayer.
