"The project grew out of a need to certification with Media $ales Basics. The Indiana Newspaper Advertis ing Executives Association reviewed several programs and even discussed developing a custom statewide pack age, Foundation Director Karen T. Braeckel said. After months of test ing various options with staff mem train new sales representatives year round, not just at our annual confer ence," Braeckel said. "We wanted something that publishers and ad directors could turn to any time they made a new hire." Registration for the free training continues through Dec. 31 at www.mediasalesbasics.com. The program provides targeted training for advertising sales profes sionals, said Denise Gibson, sales development manager with AdMall, a division of Westerville, Ohiobased Sales Development Services. "The program helps new account executives gain the foundational knowledge needed to sell in today's marketplace," Gibson said. "It allows them to be the sales team that advertisers want to buy from." Information: www.HSPA foundation.org/events Festival ads promotion HSPA studies member requirements The Membership Committee of HSPA's board of directors continues to explore the possibility of increas ing membership opportunities not available for some publications and news entities. Only paidcirculation newspapers with periodical permits issued by the U.S. Postal Service currently are eligible for a business membership in HSPA. Committee member Shannon Williams, publisher of The Indianapolis Recorder, and HSPA Executive Director and General Counsel Steve Key met July 18 with Celeste Colvitto, owner of The Bright Beacon; Jim Poyser, editor of NUVO (Indianapolis); and David McChesney of 1UP! Software. The discussion focused on the ben not eligible for HSPA membership as publications, although Colvitto and Poyser are associate members and 1UP is a sustaining member. The July meeting determined this efits that free or online publications would gain from a business member ship and what benefits HSPA might gain.
