During her 28-year career at Newsweek, Gelber worked as National Affairs Editor, Assistant Managing Editor, Managing Editor of Newsweek International, and Director of Special Projects. Her supervised coverage of the 1992 and 2004 elections won National Magazine Awards, and she created franchises including "Health for Life" with Harvard Medical School and Newsweek's first Women and Leadership series. In addition, Gelber was the founding books editor of The Daily Beast. She was a Fellow at the "Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy" at Harvard Kennedy School, A Alexis Gelber Joins Straus Media-Manhattan Team Chuck Stewart, publisher of Hudson Valley Press, dies harles Stewart, Sr. of Newburgh died November 13th, at St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital. Stewart founded and published the Hudson Valley Press, first called the Hudson Valley Black Press, for more than 30 years. The community newspaper includes content about the entire minority community of the Hudson Valley — both African- American and Latino.He also owned and operated WWLE radio, which features a Spanish language music format at 1170 am.His interests did not stop there. While in his middle age, he earned a law degree from Duke University.Stewart's long career in the field of entertainment and communications included co- producing major concerts featuring such artists as George Benson, Natalie Cole, Tom Jones, Gladys Knight and Frank Sinatra. He also performed as a singer in his own right at several profile venues including in Atlantic City and Las Vegas teaming up with the likes of Wilson Picket, Marilyn McCoo of the Fifth Dimension and others. He was active in the community, in his church and in government issues having met with President Bill and First Lady Hillary Clinton at the White House. He was born on September 7, 1943, in Deposit, NY, to the late Bruce and Marjorie Evans. He was the owner and president of the Courier Printing Corporation and was the publisher and editor of The Deposit Courier. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Sarah M. (Gilbert) Evans, and four children and their families: Matthew and Elizabeth (Wolmarans) Evans, Wurtsboro, NY; Andrew and Danielle (Marchione) Evans, Bronxville, NY; Nathan and Ashley (Willis) Evans, Columbus, OH; and Peter Evans, Deposit, NY. He leaves behind five grandchildren, two sisters and a brother, and their families. He also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, and nephews, and a great H many friends and fellow community members. In addition to his parents, Bruce and Marjorie, he was predeceased by a son, Patrick Evans. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a scholarship to be established in Hilton's memory through the Deposit Educational Endowment Program (DEEP), PO Box 22, Deposit, NY 13754. and has been an adjunct professor at NYU's Arthher L. Carter Journamism Institute. She was also Editorial Director of The Human Face of Big Data, a book and multimedia project. Gelber is a graduate of Barnard College and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. She and her husband live on the Upper West Side.
