NYPA segregates 1% of the revenue retained as sales commissions paid to NYPS by newspapers receiving display advertising placements. The 1% of revenue averages more than $75,000 annually, helping to underwrite the cost of the spring conference. The conference offers 64 training workshops, a powerful keynote speaker, awards ceremonies, social events, networking, trade show and a newspaper exchange. A great value for $49 per person. The fall publishers conference in Boston had a terrific speaker lineup including a session on cyber security issues for newspapers, making money with events, and creating an ongoing culture of innovation. 24 publishers and guests attended a Red Sox v. Yankee game at Boston's fabulous Fenway Park. Kelly Wirges and Ryan Dohrn presented advertising sales training workshops in several locations across the state, and Patrick Vecchio presented a writing workshop in Buffalo. NYPA workshops are always priced way under cost (we typically charge only enough to cover the cost of lunch) with money from the 1% holdback also underwriting regional training sessions. RESOURCES/SUPPORT/ADVOCACY: Bryan Boyhan, Joe Shaw, Garry Pierre Pierre and Michelle Rea traveled the state, encouraging publishers to implement the recommendations from the Community 360 study — a community newspaper sustainability research study conducted by RPI. NYPA assisted NYC publishers fighting a proposed news rack ordinance. NYPA and more than a dozen publishers presented testimony protesting several bills introduced by the City Council and the NYC Department of Transportation. Negotiations are ongoing. We're happy to report that implementation of the proposed Federal overtime regulations has been stayed by a preliminary injunction. Our colleagues in Washington are of the opinion that the Trump administration is unlikely to act on this anytime soon NYPA board president David Tyler chaired a committee charged with developing a content sharing platform to enable newspapers to share stories, photos, columns and video that might be of interest to a wider audience. The platform is also intended to foster collaboration on enterprise and investigative stories. NYPA president-elect Mark Vinciguerra worked with Michelle Rea to launch the National Institute for Circulation and Audience Development — a resource to help newspapers grow readership in print and online. The NYPA Foundation marked the 20th anniversary of its very successful paid summer internship program for college students. Since its inception in 1996, the program has accepted 230 interns and has invested almost $700,000 in the program. 75 newspaper companies submitted more than 3,000 entries in the Annual Better Newspaper Contest. The Sag Harbor Express won top honors for Newspaper of the Year and the Stuart C. Dorman Award for Editorial Excellence, and Dan's Papers won the John J. Evans Award for Advertising Excellence. NYPS placed $15M in display advertising in the pages of New York's newspapers in 2016, and more than $300,000 in digital advertising. NYPS will pay $200,000 to newspapers participating in the statewide classified advertising network. NYPS partnered with Adforce, a digital advertising placement firm based in Dublin, to launch a digital advertising placement service to mirror our highly successful print placement service. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, the program grew from $0 to more than $300,000 in less than a year. Highlights of 2016 (Continued on Page 3)
