Mau, owner of the Wild Haven Fiber Company along Bay View's historic Kinnickinnic Avenue business district, said the response in her inaugural year was so strong that she is tak- ing part in the event again this weekend. She is not alone. Scores of small-business owners in a full array of industries are offering specials on a day that has become a part of the modern cultural ver- nacular as a ritual to the ushering in of the holiday season. Small Business Saturday's ori- gins can be traced back seven years ago. From the get-go, credit card company American Express has spearheaded the program with promotional support. Since 2010, Small Business Saturday has been situated snug- gly in between the venerable Black Friday event that has long brought out die-hard shoppers to mass market retailers on the day after Thanksgiving and another recent phenomenon, Cyber Monday. From her vantage point, Mau said Small Business Saturday is more so about a philosophy that intertwines community with authenticity. "By shopping at our local stores, you are not only support- ing us, but the small businesses that make the items we carry," Mau said. "You often know the story behind these items, and shop owners can see how your dol- lars make a direct impact." This year, Mau is one of nearly a dozen local shopkeepers who are bringing a new twist to Small Entrepreneurs countywide:'Shop Small' See SMALL on Page 3 Small Business Saturday entering seventh year Zimmermann's Service 360 E.
