The mystery and intrigue are what have fueled the show for three success- ful seasons — that and James Spader's ("Boston Legal") slick, witty banter — and season 4 is proving to be every bit as binge- worthy as the rest. Even better, this season may actually provide some answers to long-awaited ques- tions — albeit answers that will no doubt, and true to form, lead to more questions. A new episode of "The Blacklist" airs Thursday, Nov. 10, on NBC. "The Blacklist" isn't your aver- age police procedural. The series opens with the surrender of Ray- mond "Red" Reddington (Spader), a former U.S. Naval Intelligence of- ficer and high-profile criminal who's been MIA for 20 years and boasts a spot on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list. He gives himself up to FBI Assistant Director Harold Coo- per (Harry Lennix, "Man of Steel," 2013) with the offer of his knowl- edge of, and assistance appre- hending, some of the world's most dangerous criminals. In exchange, he demands immunity from prose- cution, but has one odd condition: that he work exclusively with Agent Elizabeth Keen (Megan Boone, "My Bloody Valentine," 2009), a rookie profiler recently as- signed to Cooper. From then on, viewers — not to mention Elizabeth and her col- leagues — were left to wonder and speculate on what Red's con- nection to Liz may be, since he sure as heck isn't telling us. As the series has progressed, we've gradually pieced together bits of Red's and Liz's lives and his particular interest in her, but we're far from having the whole story. In fact, every detail we get just adds to the mystery of the connection between the two characters. "I think for 'The Blacklist' to continue, every answer that you provide the audience with — and also certain characters on the show — every answer has to pose two more questions," Spader said during a "Today" interview. "Oth- erwise the paradigm for the show sort of fractures ... the engine of the show is a sort of enigmatic character. As you chip away at the enigma, if you chip away too much, your show has ended." So it sounds like, according to Spader, we won't have Red fully unraveled until the end of the se- ries. That doesn't stop viewers from working under assumptions, how- ever, and a number of theories are in constant circulation as to why Red is so invested in Liz. The most common of these is that he's her Feature this week
