He also mentioned that as much as he wants to highlight stunning technological advances in the series, it's not a sci-fi show, and a lot of the gadgets are based on real ideas. "We're looking at this as what's possible," he said. "All the technology that is used in the show is all based on real things that are being developed all over the world. Not stuff that's being used yet or at the stage that we see it in the show, but there are things being developed and tested, and we're looking at that." Aside from Mulroney and Prew (who is making the jump across the pond after establishing him- self in the U.K.), the "Pure Genius" cast is solid. Brenda Song ("The Suite Life of Zack and Cody"), Reshma Shetty ("Royal Pains"), Ward Horton ("Annabelle," 2014), Aaron Jennings ("Movie 43," 2012) and Odette Annable ("House") all star, and they work well together on screen. Katims, for his part, is no slouch in the television world, even if he's currently renowned for his family dramas, not medical dramas. His NBC series "Friday Night Lights" was a critical success and earned him an Emmy (Outstanding Writ- ing for a Drama Series), but low ratings initially threatened to de- rail the series. It ended up sticking around for five years before its cancelation in 2011, and in the years that followed, Katims wrote and produced two more well-re- garded series for NBC — "Parent- hood" and "About a Boy" — as well as the screenplay for the Ra- chel McAdams-starring romance "The Vow" (2012). Recently, he produced the Hulu series "The Path," which was picked up for a second season in May. At the end of the day, "Pure Ge- nius" might come across more as "pure science fiction," but the se- ries is shaping up to be an enjoy- able watch. Katims maintains that it tries to focus on being real, but can also be a nice escape from the grind of everyday life. "What we're trying to balance is an aspirational quality of the show with wish fulfillment — there is hope," Katims said. "In the world we're living in now ... there's a need for that and a want for that." Catch the series premiere of "Pure Genius" when it airs Thurs- day, Oct. 27, on CBS.
