TV Media Weekly | October 15 - 21, 2016 By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: Will "Sister Wives" be back for another season? What do they do for a living besides the show? A: Neither TLC nor the many members of the Brown family fea- tured in "Sister Wives" have made an announcement about a new season. The most recent season only wrapped at the end of June, so we may not know for a while. As for what they do in between episodes — that is, how they pay for their enormous houses in Ve- gas, and how they feed their ever- growing clan — they're all a bit ca- gey with details. A few things were laid out early on in the show: Patriarch Kody Brown worked in the advertising industry in some capacity, though he seems to have left that behind as the show has gained fame. Meri, one of Kody's four wives, has said that she lost her job when it be- came known (via the show) that she's in a polygamous family. And Janelle used to run a food-storage business called EZ Pantry, but that seems to be defunct now as well. In fact, Janelle is the one whose career(s) we know most about. She used to work for the state govern- ment in Utah, but when the family moved en masse to Las Vegas, she switched to a career in real estate. She said that her fame from the show has been "a huge asset" to her real estate business, and that gets at the reality of their situation: It seems that the Brown family makes most of its money either di- rectly or indirectly from the show. Lifestyle website The Stir esti- mates that they earn at least $50,000 per episode — it really is just a guess, but the show is big business for TLC, so they're certain- ly being compensated well. But the family is also engaging in a range of side ventures. They have an official website, Kody- BrownFamily.com, through which they sell copies of their book, and offer themselves up for paid speak- ing engagements. The site also links to another side business, My Sisterwife's Closet, a jewelry and apparel business they run together. Have a question? Email us at questions@tvtabloid.com. Well, as Sarah Sharratt is discovering in her new French home, that saying isn't exactly true in every country. The American-born and sub- urbia-raised mother of two is a bona fide cheese lover, and now that she's living in the French countryside, she's sur- rounded by some of the best in the world. The other thing that she's surrounded by is TV cameras. "UpRooted," which premiered Oct. 1 and continues to air Sat- urdays on Cooking Channel, follows the Cordon Bleu- trained chef as she adjusts to her new home in a foreign land, with a particular focus on French food and food culture. Along with her two kids, three dogs and flock of chick- ens, she's using the rural French countryside to find the ingredi- ents and inspiration for her cu- linary creations. In this week's episode, airing Saturday, Oct. 22, Sarah has some of her new friends over for a seasonally appropriate meal. It's springtime in the French countryside (in this epi- sode, at least), and she's serv- ing up dishes using local ingre- dients. How does freshly picked white asparagus with sauce gribiche (a mayonnaise-like, egg-based dressing) served along with a freshly made duck pate and finished with a lemon posset (a sweet and frothy milk-based drink) sound? It's a midday meal that just screams "French countryside," but while Sarah lives far from the cosmopolitan bustle of the country's big cities, she's also keeping her finger on the pulse of what's happening there. Next week, she visits Paris to check out the famous city's modern food scene. She heads to the markets and checks out luxury food shops to get a taste for what sorts of foods Parisians are enjoying — she even gets a private cooking lesson from one of the city's hottest chefs! It's definitely been a culture shock for the American to move to the rural part of a country where she doesn't even speak the language well, but the lan- guage of food is universal — plus there's always the cheese. A new episode of Sarah Shar- ratt's "UpRooted" airs Satur- day, Oct. 22, on Cooking Chan- nel.
